The Salem, Virginia National Guard has been deploying in support of the Global War on Terror since 2002. The unit is composed of three infantry brigades and a cavalry squadron. The brigade consists of three battalions- one each from the 1st Battalion, 15th Regiment (Provisional), 3d Battalion, 17th Regiment (Light Horse) and 4th Battalion, 19th Regiment (Infantry). Each battalion is organized into two squads and each squad is divided into three platoons. The regiment's primary mission is to provide security for military installations within the state of Virginia as well as support local law enforcement during emergencies. Additionally, the unit provides humanitarian assistance through providing food and water to refugees and disaster victims. In 2009, the regiment was mobilized for Operation Iraqi Freedom. After Deploying to Kuwait in August of that year and being stationed at Ramadi until November 2006, 1/15/1909 arrived in Iraq "in time for winter". With over 9 years deployed in Iraq deployments including multiple combat tours throughout both Shia controlled areas and Sunni controlled areas calls were made for an all arms brigade presence to counter insurgent activity particularly with regards to Syria where insurgents have been active recently threatening Baghdad; specifically targeting Shi'ite Shia militias known as Sadrists who have continued their fight against U.S.-backed government troops while also collaborating with Islamist militants operating inside Iraq. Salem, Virginia is an unincorporated community in Caroline County, Virginia. It is located east of Strasburg on the south side of the James River. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. Salem was founded in 1792 by refugees from Boston who were fleeing persecution there during the American Revolution.
