Salem, Virginia was once a center of the American air force. The Salem-Pittsfield Air National Guard Base was founded in 1936 and served as a training ground for pilots before becoming an operational airport in 1941. In 1945, the base became the home of the Ninth Air Force, which helped to win World War II against Japan. From 1951 to 1957, Salem also housed two Strategic Air Command squadrons. After the war, Salem became an active hub for military aviation and saw growth in both civilian and military aviation until it closed its doors in 1993. Today, Salem is home to five small airstrips that serve as primary landing strips for civil aircraft and transient military planes used by civilians or Army Reserve units. Salem, Virginia is a small town in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The population was 5,811 at the 2000 census. It is located in Prince William County. Salem is one of the oldest settlements in Prince William County and has been called "The City on the Hill." The first settler was James Caldwell, who arrived in 1776. The city was founded by Captain John Smith as Fort Cumberland on May 11, 1777. In 1801, Salem incorporated as a town under the name of Pittsylvania County. On January 1, 1868, Salem became a part of Loudoun County and changed its name to Salem-Newport News. Salem's rich history is documented by its many historical markers and museums which are open to the public during regular hours or by appointment only through special events or groups such as Friends of Salem Historical Park which preserves and restores much of this important community's fabric. One such event took place on September 10th-12th, 2009 when over 100 local historians from around the world gathered together to celebrate American History Day at Point Lookout Regional Park in Newport News for two days of genealogical research via oral history interviews with residents about their ancestors who lived and worked in Salem between 1700-2009! This unique opportunity allowed researchers access to rare family records that have never been available elsewhere before! Some other highlights from this rich cultural history include: In 1692 John Norden purchased 2 acres (0.81 km²) southeast of present-day Route 620 east side road for $10 payment because he could not find an adequate home for himself or his family near where he lived onchurchgoing dirt roads west side Road known then as Indian Path(now Warwick Rd). He named his land "Newport News" after his old home country New England - also known then as Acadia Parish - now upstate New York . He built what is now known as Norden's House which still stands today within walking distance of Portsmouth Naval Shipyard stoplight off Route 620 . His grandson 3rd generation resident Samuel Norden moved here in 1828 with wife Sarah Collins from Connecticut after her husband’s death; they raised three children here – Alfred (1829–1902), Willis (1830–1913),and Clarissa (1832–1914). Samuel began harvesting oysters from Smith Bayou tidal estuary off shore beginning about 1840; oyster production continued until 1915 when shellfish beds were destroyed by pollution caused by shipbuilding operations nearby at Norfolk Navy Yard
