Richmond, VA is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, U.S.A. It was founded in 1785 by James City County residents who named it for the Duke of Richmond, then an important figure in British America. The city served as the capital of the United States from 1789 to 1865, and is now a major center for business and culture. The area that now makes up Richmond was first settled by Native Americans during the Late Woodland period (ca. 1400-1800). For many years this area lay within present-day York County; however, development began to occur in earnest around 1800 when Englishmen arrived to exploit natural resources such as coal and timber. The town of James City was established on November 3, 1800 by Captain John Smith and Colonel Nicholas Lee at what is now known as Tenth Street and Broadwalk Avenue. At first much land remained undeveloped becauseof its strategic location near navigable rivers: until 1802 only a small portion of present-day Shockoe Bottom existed within present day Richmond proper; but because transportation became available through steamboats running down the Potomac River valley, large areas were developed over time including Shockoe Bottom itself between 1802 and 1824’s canalization project which created 4 square miles (10 km2) of new territory which included today’s Shockoe Bottom neighborhood along with eastern Carytown (now Midtown), West End (now Sheppard Heights), Stonebridge (now part of Chinatown), New Market(now part of Midtown Center), Exeter(now part of Glen Burnie), Highway 15(now Interstate 95) & Petersburg(presently called Elizabeth City) – all located within modern day downtown Richmond limits today! One reason why development occurred so rapidly near navigable waterways was that there wasn’t yet any real market for goods produced east or west of Williamsburg due to lack of population or infrastructure at that time! By 1804 there had been some construction progress on both sides OFthe river but no actual growth until after President Thomas Jefferson took office in 1801 and started developing plans for his new nation! In fact it wasn’t until after he left office that things really picked up with lots more people moving into what is now downtown Richmond – much like they are doing right now! Development continued apace under Presidents James K Polk, Franklin D Roosevelt & Lyndon Johnson – each oversaw various aspects Ofthe city’s rapid expansion including annexation OF adjacent jurisdictions making it larger than ever before!
