This ecclesiastical establishment remains today as part of Episcopal Diocese of Virginia On April 14, 1865 Confederate general Robert Ewell landed his division at Point Pleasant Naval Station onRichmond Peninsula and ordered his troops into open battle against Union forces commanded by Ulysses S Grant When news arrived that Robert Ewell had been killed near Appomattox Court House north of town on April 15th 1865 Confederate General Jubal Early advanced through town towards Interstate 95 leading up Market Street where he encountered Federal cavalry units commanded by Ulysses S Grant As Confederate General Early approached I-95 he suddenly halted his advance due to heavy fire from Federal artillery positioned along the interstate opposite him Although both armies were losing blood at fast rates Confederate General Early decided not to pursue further into Virginia after seeing reports that UnionGeneral Stoneman had taken command of Union forces northwest of Petersburg On April 16th 1865 Union general Ulysses S Grant reached Petersburg after crossing I-95 near Danville Junction On April 17th 1865 President Abraham Lincoln signed Executive Order 9606 ordering all slaveholders within six milesof each state capital duty must arm their families and take arms against possible slave rebellion
