The purchase marked the beginning of American settlement in this part of Virginia. In 1802–03, Colonel Nicholas Westphal built Fort Tryon along present day Broad Street within sight of Mount Vernon and established control over much of southeastern Virginia. In 1814 General Robert Ewell published his report recommending that all British forces removed from Virginians south of James River before May 1st due to fear that they might attack American forces at any time. As a result, large numbers OF Virginians abandoned their plantations and set off for North Carolina or Tennessee during those years – one-third had left by 1816! By 1840 only about 10 percent remained in virginia proper while nearly half had migrated to other states across the US by 1850! That same year also saw another significant change when King George IV gave his royal assent to amendments creating the Constitution which allocated landowning aristocrats power over citizens through land tenure systems known as "vested interests." These changes not only inaugurated a new era for Virginias demographics but also opened up new possibilities for economic development as well as increasing political instability throughout much southern slaveholding America following emancipation many years later!
