The Radford Naval Shipyard has been a proud and important part of the Virginia Navy for over 120 years. And since helicopters are also incredibly lightweight, they can easily move large amounts of material or personnel around quickly if necessary. Radford is a historic town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It was named for General James Robertson, who fought in the American Revolution and later served as an U.S. Senator from Virginia. The population of Radford was 12,418 at the 2010 census. Radford has been called "the most ancient town in America" by historian George Mason University's history department because it was founded by English colonists in 1624 as part of the Colony of Jamestown. In 1795, during the Northwest Ordinance period of American government development, Radford became one of nine towns located within present-day Loudoun County to ratify the ordinance establishing what would become Fairfax County. In 1801, when Fairfax County was created from parts of Loudoun and Prince William counties, Radford became part of that county also. The town's first store opened in 1792 and its first post office was established in 1800. The town's only school opened in 1802 and closed in 1906; however, a second school operated until 1925 inside the current courthouse complex on Main Street (later renamed College Avenue). The town experienced rapid growth following World War I with many new homes being built around military installations such as Fort McNair and Camp Butler; however, after World War II the population began to decrease due to suburbanization and other lifestyle changes across Loudoun County. As a result of this decrease, muchof RADFORD'S architecture from the 1920s onward has been lost or destroyed: most notably Old Main Baptist Church which now stands vacant on College Avenue near Interstate 66 (formerly Old National Highway 66). During the late 1960s through early 1970s RADFORD experienced some revitalization with new businesses opening up including a local restaurant called THE KITCHEN (now defunct) and a large shopping mall known as Northgate Mall which anchored several nearby streets including Courthouse Road/Broadway Avenue near Interstate 66 (now just Route 30). However these latter developments too came to an end after heavy zoning regulation enacted by then-County Supervisor Nelson Wachtel led to complaints from residents about increased traffic noise at night outside their business districts - problems that continue to this day despite various attempts by RADFORD leaders over recent years to address them directly..
In 1802, General Robert E. Lee and his Confederate army were marching toward Fredericksburg when they were halted by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederacy was defeated and the remaining members of the military surrendered. In 1865, Virginia became a slave state following the American Civil War.
