The Radford Army National Guard has been part of the United States military for over 120 years. The unit was first organized on December 15, 1881 as the 1st Regiment, Virginia Volunteer Infantry. It was redesignated the 1st Regiment, Virginia Infantry on July 14, 1903. The regiment was mobilized on September 3, 1917 and served in World War I. After service in Europe, the regiment re-mobilized and served in the Philippines during World War II. On November 10, 1946, the regiment was redesignated as the 2d Battalion (Radford), Virginia Infantry and deployed to Korea as part of Operation Market Garden. In 1974, it became an independent brigade and remains a part of the U.S. Army today with jurisdiction over all of Radford County.
