Portsmouth, Virginia is a town in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 12,651 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampshire County. Portsmouth is one of three incorporated cities in Hampton Roads metropolitan area and also includes much of North Kingstown and South Kingstown on its east side. The first people to live in Portsmouth were the Powhatan Indians who arrived there about 17th century. They left around 1607 when English colonists began settling in what is now Southampton County, Virginia. The first permanent white settler was Captain John Smith who landed on December 15, 1607 at Jameson's Island (now called Yorktown) with his party of crewmen under cover of night to find new land for England. He named the island "Portsmouth" after his hometown, Portsmouth in England.
