However, since World War II it has been struggling with economic decline and suburbanization. In 2000, Portsmouth joined Fairfax County as an incorporated city. Portsmouth's history goes back over two hundred years to when it was part of British India. A post office called Portsmouth had been established in 1771, and published its first notice in October of that year. The name derived from a local feature – Patchogue Point on the Rappahannock River – which faced southward towards Norfolk Island (the site of modern day Portsmouth). English colonists began settling here around 1800 and by 1810 there were more than twenty families living hereabouts. By 1830 there were well over one hundred people living hereabouts; within thirty years only about fifty remain today! The first buildings erected in what would become Portsmouth were log huts used by pioneers who prospected for coal near present-day Great Falls Road and Worth Roadsides east of town limits on Mayflower Creek (now Lakeshore Drive). Coalmining operations ceased almost immediately due to competition from oil production out West but left their mark on this small community through their muckraking journalists who chronicled everyday life aboard ships engaged at sea or ashore along Coastal Plain rivers such as James River etc., continuing until after World War II when these papers became unavailable orDestroyed by fire Today we can see evidence of some early mining operations scattered throughout downtown area including Drury Lane where tenement buildings still stand dating back to 1820 - just northeast of present day Post Office Square

The town rapidly grew during the colonial period and became one of Virginia's leading commercial centers. In 1775, after the Battle of Yorktown, Portsmouth was taken over by the United States and renamed Fort George Washington. The town continued to grow and development occurred until 1815, when it was annexed by Norfolk County, Va., creating what is now Norfolk. In 1915 Portsmouth became an incorporated city and has since been one of America's most thriving cities. The history of Portsmouth began with its founding by English traders seeking passage down the James River in order to find new markets for their goods. At first there were only a few homes and businesses in town; however, over time Portsmouth's growth led to its becoming one of Virginia's most significant cities. The early residents were primarily shipwrights and merchants who used the river as a transportation hub between their regional businesses and points north or south on the Atlantic coast. This trade created many jobs for local people as well as helping to drive up prices for goods exported from Virginia. During the Revolutionary War (1775-83), Portsmouth played an important role due to its location at strategic points on both sides of the river bed. For example, it was from here that General John Burgoyne managed his march through northern Virginia to try and surrender Toronto Heights before battle could take place at Yorktown in September 1777. It also played a critical role in supporting General George Washington throughout his campaign against British forces during that year's Boston Campaign (December 1776- April 1777). After Yorktown, Portsmouth came under American control and experienced heavy development thanks to white settlers - many of whom were Quakers - who moved into what had once been Indian territory in order to establish themselves as farmers or business owners within this predominantly Anglo-Saxon community. In spite of all these accomplishments, however, Portsmouth never achieved true prominence within American society until after World War II when it became home to America's largest naval base – Hampton Roads – as well as being one of America's most important industrial communities.* During this time it also saw major population growth due largely to waves of refugees fleeing Nazi Germany* during World War II†(*As part of Operation Paperclip*, UVA recruited large numbers from Nazi Germany**).
