The Poquoson Navy Yard was founded in 1794 by Captain James Webb, a naval officer who served during the American Revolution. The yard produced warships for the Virginia navy, and also built vessels for the Spanish navy. In 1853, the navy Yard was merged with the Richmond Navy Yard to form the Richmond-Poquoson Naval Shipyard. That year, USS Constitution (1797) was launched from theyard. The first U.S.-built warship to be commissioned at the yard was USS Monitor (1862). In 1912, HMS Warrior (1859), one of three British warships that were sunk while serving as part of Admiral David Dixon Porter's First Fleet off Santiago de Cuba, was launched from the Pogue Marine Dry Dock at the yard. In 1941, NAS Petersburg became part of NAS Kings Point upon its opening as an all-island military air facility; it remained an all-island naval station until its closure in 1972. During World War II, Poquoson played an important role in harbor defense as well as providing material support to ground forces; examples include supplying ammunition and fuel to ships offshore and launching torpedo bombers against Japanese targets. After World War II ended, Poquoson reverted back to being an all-island naval station once again.Today, NAS Petersburg remains an important center for DOD operations afloat and ashore throughout Hampton Roads region; it is home to both Naval Air Station Norfolk and Naval Surface Warfare Center Portsmouth.]

Poquoson is a small town in Virginia, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lynchburg– Highland Heights, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poquoson was founded in 1768 by Captain James Armistead and his wife Anne Ballou as a landing on York River for trade with the Native Americans. Captain Armistead's Landing still stands, and is now an archaeological site open to the public from 9am to 4pm during regular business hours. The landing area has been reconstructed using materials from the original structures and remains of boats used by Captain Armistead and his team. The present day Poquoson was originally called "Bentonville" after Nathaniel Benton who had bought land in 1776 along York River for $5 per acre. In 1801, Captain John Coker established a post here named Fort Coker on what are now known as College Street and Cumberland Road. This fort served as a base of operations for Confederate generals during the American Civil War including Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson. After Union General George McClellan arrived at Fort Coker on July 6, 1862 to relieve Confederate forces under General Johnston near Petersburg, Virginia he ordered his troops to retreat back up YORK RIVER TO FORT CAKERON which they did on July 11th 1862 when Union General Sherman arrived at Petersburg completing their withdrawal from Richmond Governor Fitzhugh O'Neill declared "A Triumph over Yankees!" In 1903 Poquoson became part of Lynchburg County when it was organized out of parts of Hampton Roads District 2 (Richmond County). At that time it had a population of 556 people living in 53 buildings totaling 5 acres with one schoolhouse, two churches and one store serving its residents until 1924 when all but two buildings were destroyed by fire caused by arson while being used as housing for soldiers barracks adjacent to then US Military Academy at West Point whereupon local citizens rebuilt them using federal funds aided by donations from individual citizens followed by an addition totown government building completed in 1928 which remain today serve as both municipal hall/ administration office annexe & library annexe

The loss of livelihood hit Poquoson hard, and it lost its status as a major center of trade and commerce. Consequently, the population dwindled over time and eventually died out completely by 1830.
