Poquoson is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 1,634 at the 2010 census. Poquoson is located on the James River and on the edge of Lynchburg County. It is bordered by Winchester to the north, Portsmouth to the east, Newport News to the south and Culpeper County to the west. The first Europeans to visit Poquoson were French in 1607 and English in 1614. William Byrdner, an American Revolutionary War veteran and member of the Board of Visitors for Prince Edward Island, visited Poquoson in 1798 while he was exploring what becameVirginia. He noted that "the place has a beautiful view of James River" and that it had "a large mill where flour is ground." In 1802–03 Captain John Smith exploredPoquoson creek from its mouth upstream before reaching Lynchburg; he named it for General Thomas “Butch” Heth who deserted his regiment duringthe Battle of Saratoga (1777). In 1822 George Washington journeyed through Poquoson on his way to Lynchburg; he stopped at a plantation near present-day Winchester on his way back from Valley Forge. A group of local farmers collected stones to build a fence around Washington's perimeter as part of their day-long labor effort; they called themselves "The Stone Wall Gang". Although they failed to keep pace with Washington's march across Virginia during his visit, their creation remains one of Prince Edward County's earliest public memories. In 1829 Colonel Robert Ewell built a sawmill overhang above present-day Main Street which still stands today as one of Poquosonexampleofan early commercial structure in central Virginia. The sawmill remained operational until 1954 when it was replaced by a power plant. A post office was established at Poquoossetown in 1832; it remained operational until 1959 when it changed its name to Lynchburg Post Office Inc.. At present time there are no buildings associated with that period remaining withinPoquoonsightlineexceptfora small cemetery located about three miles southeast of town along Route 9W./Upper James River Ferry Road/. . . . The National Guard has been a part of the United States since 1795. The first national guard unit was organized on December 15, 1795, by George Washington as a military force to protect American settlers in the new country. The first national guard regiment was raised on April 14, 1800, and served until 1815. In 1816, the first brigade of cavalry was raised and served until 1860. In 1861, all artillery units were disbanded and National Guardsmen were re-organized into infantry brigades under General Philip Sheridan. After the Civil War ended in 1865, there were no more national guard regiments or brigades until 1982 when Congress created four new brigades with nation wide jurisdiction. These brigades are now called the Army Reserve Component Command (ARCOM). National Guard gifts have been a part of US history for over two centuries and many different items have been given to members of the Guard including firearms, uniforms, tools and equipment as well as cash donations for various projects such as charity drives or military funerals. Poquoson is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the King George's County metropolitan area. Poquoson was established in 1775 as a small Indian village by Captain John Smith and his band of Englishmen during their Expedition to destroy the Powhatan Confederacy. The name means "place where many people gather." The first permanent settler in Poquoson was Nicholas Pope, who arrived in 1776. He built a house on the east side of town and named it Pope's Necklace after himself and his brother-in-law Nicholas Hillyard. In 1814, Colonel Nathaniel Pendleton Post founded an academy here for boys which later became Randolph-Macon College. In 1851, Poquoson had its first doctorate degree earned when Dr. Gouverneur Morris conferred upon Doctor James Buchanan Woodruffilitation at Randolph-Macon College (now West Virginia University). In 1865, Poquoson became one of the towns incorporated into Fairfax County effective February 14th following the creation of the county from portions of Richmond and Northern Virginia that were being consolidated into that county under General Order No. 9 issued by Governor Abraham Lincoln on November 15th that year pursuant to law No. 7 of 1862 entitled "An Act to create Fairfax County". In 1898, during World War I veteran John Ladds enlisted with Company KV2/503rd Infantry Battalion (the "Peaceful Progressors"), 2nd U S Infantry Regiment (the "Fighting Sons"), then serving as Headquarters Company Northwest Territory Infantry Brigade Group unit attached to 21st Army Corps Reserve commanded by Lieutenant General Pershing while participating in maneuvers off Anacostia River near Arlington National Cemetery southwest tip of Washington D .C . On or about December 16th 1918 he sustained combat wounds from artillery fire while assigned as Platoon Leader Cplt 331st Machine Gun Battalion 517th Field Artillery Regiment contact with Japanese forces off Suribachi Peninsula Okinawa Japan During World War II USAAF Station Elmendorf Bay - POQUOSON VIRGINIA Our veterans have given us so much we wouldn't be able to do without them!
