Poquoson is a small town in Caroline County, Virginia, United States. It is located on the James River at the mouth of Intracoastal Waterway. The population was 3,679 at the 2010 census. Poquoson's ZIP code is 22609. The first permanent settler in Poquoson was Major John Smith who arrived in 1777 and built a house on present-day Hill Street. He and his wife named their home "Pocotaloon". Other early settlers included Captain John Pitkin (1798), Major George Washington's father-in-law, who came in 1802; Nathaniel Bacon (1815); Elisha Parsons (1822); Charles Goode (1828); and Isaiah Thomas (1834). In 1824, General James K. Polk sent a military detachment to Poquoson to quench local anger over what had been called an illegal slave trade taking place along the James River. When no response was received from the community after three days, he ordered his men to return without finding any slaves being sold or traded within its boundaries. On July 10, 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell landed at Norfolk with 1,500 troops intending to march upriver towards Richmond under the guidance of Union general Ulysses S. Grant until they were stopped by Confederate cavalry near Pee Dee Key lighthouse just south of Kingsport while they were unloading supplies for Admiral David Dixon Porter’s forces blockading Petersburg Harbor. As soon as news reached Poquoson that General Robert Ewell was advancing downriver they began organizing their citizens into militias and arming themselves before coming out against slavery when Federal troops arrived on July 12th with orders not to fire upon them since they were unaware of their true purpose: stopping Confederate reinforcements from marching upriver towards Richmond under cover of darkness so that Union army commanders could better appreciate Samuel Tilden’s strategic move instead of pushing further inland where they would be vulnerable to attack from superior numbers should Confederates attempt an amphibious assault against Petersburg Harbor – something which had never happened before and which Gouverneur Morris believed would ultimately fail because “the enemy cannot be prevailed upon either by land or sea To cross [the] river” – panic ensued throughout Poquoson as terrified residents ran into buildings or hid behind trees until federal soldiers arrived on scene ordering everyone back inside so that there could be some kind of order - such as when one civilian risked his life hiding beneath a bed outside government offices while others took refuge inside churches during gunfire sounds heard miles away just prior to daylight the next day; it took nearly two hours for all people inside government buildings including President Buchanan’s bedroom where he was having breakfast before finally emerging around 2 p.m., retrieve his personal effects then leave through another door handle[]; this particular episode has cometo be known as “The Battle At Pointblank” due both to Federal casualties including two officers killed outright as well as numerous hand grenades thrown into multiple places within Government buildings resulting in extensive damage; however according to historian Jerry Mander[], only one officer died direct from grenade thrower fire with most fatalities occurring among fleeing civilians who had no choice but to run headlong into danger given whatever protection Generals Grant & Ewell offered them rather than stand and fight where there seemed little chance for survival) In 1865 Robert Ewell surrendered at Appomattox Court House following drove 4 field artillery piecesmnlnsn w/ 50 rounds each
