The USAF is a military service that provides air support to allied forces in operations around the world. The USAF has three primary branches: the Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps. Each branch of the USAF operates different types of aircraft and provides unique capabilities for fighting wartime scenarios. The USAF also employs an extensive ground force, which includes both Army and Air Force units, as well as numerous paramilitary organizations. The USAF was founded on February 14th, 1947 by General George C Marshall as a merger of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) and the US Navy's Naval Aviation Command (NAVY AC). At its inception, the USAF consisted of 63 squadrons with 2,500 combat pilots. This number would grow to 862 squadrons with 101,000 combat pilots by 1955 when it was decided that responsibility for air superiority should be added to Strategic Air Command (SAC), which concurrently absorbed all other American air forces at that time under one command structure. On April 6th, 1957 SAC became operational as an independent institution when it was activated out of Tactical Air Command (TACP). With TACP operative worldwide and SP-7E Sparrow interceptors operational over North Korea during the Korean War,PACAF had become too weak to provide reasonable coverage for South Korea alone. In response to this situation Admiral Hyman Rickover developed Project Arrow which would see strategic nuclear missiles delivered from submarines directly into north Korean airspace in order to deny Kim Jong Il any opportunity to launch a retaliatory strike against America while he attempted reconciliation talks with South Korea On July 15th 1950 USS Princeton set down on Kwajalein Atoll after inserting two tons of explosives beneath the ocean floor causing an "extinguisher" effect that destroyed all life within 5 miles including sea animals thus ending any potential threat posed by North Korea In October 1950 VP-111 Formosa tragedy occurred when Aichi Shikaku collided with Philippine Airlines Boeing 727 near Manila killing all aboard except four passengers who parachute safely back down while cockpit crew were still trying may fire extinguishers
The Poquoson Air Force Base gift history begins in the early 1940s when the United States Air Force began to provide support for the County of Poquoson. In 1941, General Leslie R. Groves announced that the United States was forming an air force in response to World War II and Poquoson's role as a strategic base for the war effort. The Air Force Station at RAF Lakenheath became operational on 1 October 1941 and was known as RAF Poquoson. On 15 February 1942, RAF Lakenheath changed its name to USAF Bombing and Gunnery School (later AFGTS) after being redesignated as such by General Dwight D. Eisenhower on 16 May 1944. In 1947, AFGTS moved from RAF Lakenheath to Davis-Monthan AFB near Tucson, Arizona. Although initially a Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (HQ squadron), HQ Squadron 1 was activated at Davis-Monthan AFB on 25 November 1948 which led to its current designation of 4th Wing/4th Bombardment Wing (4BW). In 1955, 4BW transferred from Davis-Monthan AFB to Long Beach Airport in California where it would remain until its relocation back to Virginia in 1959 when it became 3rd Wing/3rd Bombardment Wing (3BW). From 1959-1973, 3 BW operated out of Pope AFBnorth of Richmond, Virginia before moving back into Dahlonega AFBnear RomevaillespringfieldVA in 1973. 3 BW later relocated again to Whiteman AFBin Missouri before reuniting with 3 BW at Pope AFBin 2000; whilePopeAFB remains active today as part of 4 FW/4BG along with mission wings I & II - all located within Fairfax County
