She was then sold to a group of investors and she spent most of her final years moored at Norfolk Naval Shipyard. In 1984, she was moved to Portsmouth, Virginia and currently resides there as part of the Museum of History and Industry.

In 1861, when Confederate General Robert E Lee moved his headquarters from Richmond to Petersburg, he began to make preparations for an all-out war with America's largest country. On April 12th, 1861, Confederate forces attacked Ulysses S. Grant's Union army near Petersburg while Grant was marching through the town to relieve Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. The battle resulted in over 60 casualties on both sides and led to military occupation of Petersburg by Confederate troops until Union forces arrived and drove them out on May 10th. In 1865, after the Civil War ended, Union General James Longstreet moved his headquarters from Petersburg to nearby Roanoke Island and ordered its burning after he learned that Confederate General Robert E Lee had taken refuge there with a band of his men
