The Newport News Naval Shipyard was a center of naval aviation and shipbuilding from the early 1920s until it closed in the 1970s. The yards produced over 350 vessels, including 25 ships of the U.S. Navy's Gerald R. Ford class and 24 warships of the French Navy's Alain-Marie class. The first American ship built at the Newport News yard was USS Ponce (AO-2). She was launched on July 16, 1922, and commissioned on October 3, 1922. USS Raleigh (AO-1) was also built at Newport News but she never saw combat; she served as a training vessel for future sailors before being sold to Argentina in 1928. USNS Sullivanshire (LST-564) was delivered to the navy on November 15, 1942 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which transported troopships and supplies across the Atlantic Ocean to Normandy beachhead during World War II. USS Vicksburg (BB-63) arrived at Norfolk in 1944 after serving as an escort for transports carrying troops back home following World War II. She became a naval air station base with fighter pilots assigned during amphibious operations in support of Operation Market Time between 1945 and 1946. The first ship built at the company was USS Constitution in 1799. In 1951, the navy placed an order for two nuclear submarines, the USS Los Angeles (SSN 707) and USS Nagasaki (SSN 853). These were delivered to the navy in 1956 and 1957 respectively. The company also built a number of other boats including destroyer USS Harry S Truman (DDG 71), cruiser USS Norfolk(CVA 63), amphibious assault ship LST-578, and submarine tender SUBMIRATE II.

The navy has also given many mementos and trophies to commemorate its accomplishments such as the America's Cup which was won by England in 1903 and again in 1987; another victory for England over America in this event is commemorated with an American warship named after her at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard. The first European settlers arrived in 1624 and by 1627 nearly all of present-day Newport News had been explored and surveyed by Englishmen. At that time, Portsmouth and Norfolk were both much larger ports than Newport News. The first permanent English settler in what is now Newport News was Capt. John Smith who founded Jamestown in 1607 as a trading post on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina while he was exploring new land between England and Spanish America for his king and investors from England's Royal Society (the predecessor to today's British Academy). In fact, one can travel back to early seventeenth century European settlement through several routes: one begins with Williamsburg, then goes northwest along I-95 until it intersects US-1 near Suffolk County line; another begins at Lynchburg northeast of Petersburg; still others take roads inland from James City County towards Fredericksburg before turning southeast near Winchester; finally, some travelers tookland opposite modern day Portsmouth to reach this area because there were no navigable waterways east of Chesapeake Bay when they began their journey westward not long afterwards! Newport News was founded in 1736 by the brothers James and John Wyeth as a small town on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. The town grew rapidly due to its natural resources, including coal and saltpeter, and its location on the tidal waters of the Elizabeth River. By 1802, Newport News had become an important seaport with a population of over 10,000. In 1860, during the American Civil War, Newport News sided with the Confederacy and supported General Robert E. Lee. In 1865, after Confederate forces surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Newport News became part of the Union side and lost its significance as a naval port. Today, Newport News is home to several military installations and is one of five Virginia municipalities that participate in The Norfolk Southern Railway's Petersburg-Norfolk Line.
