The Newport News National Guard was established in 1924 as a military reserve unit. The first unit was organized at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard, and served until 1931. In 1932, the National Guard detachment at Hampton Roads was formed, and in 1934 it became a full-time unit. In 1941, the Navy activated the Newport News National Guard to provide personnel for Operation Torch. The unit served as part of Navy Task Force 1 from June 1942 to November 1944. From 1945 until 1947, units of the Newport News National Guard fought in World War II under various command including Fleet Marine Forces Atlantic (FVMFA), United States Army Air Forces (USAAF), and United States Marines Corps (USMC). After World War II ended, the Virginia General Assembly authorized the formation of a state guard force on July 1, 1948. On September 14, 1951, martial law was declared throughout VA due to Suez Crisis; however this did not expire until October 15th when it expired by executive order due to lack of funds. On October 16th militia troops were called into action after an attempted assassination against then Governor George Wallace which led to violence acrossVA On December 9th President Truman signed Executive Order 6382 giving local governments discretion over whether or not to maintain national guard duty during peacetime but making all reservists liable for any federal government laws which may be violated whileNational Guardsmen are on duty If local governments decline or cannot maintain military readiness then reservists must return home without pay . The order also created new channels for communication between state militias and federal police forces In 1957 state guard units were attached to Department of Defense Civilian Support Functions with jurisdiction over certain types of crime such as narcotics smuggling etc.. These functions were eventually discontinued in 1972 when departmental control transferred from DOD to State Police . Militia troops continued in civil support roles through much of this time although their mission gradually shifted away from guarding civilians toward more ceremonial tasks such as parades and pageants

The Newport News National Guard was organized on December 12, 1792. The first national guard unit was the 11th Regiment of Virginia Infantry. It was disbanded in 1802. The 1st Regiment of Virginia Infantry was organized on July 15, 1792 and it served with distinction throughout the American Revolution including Battle of Bunker Hill. The regiment also fought at Saratoga and Yorktown. In 1861, the regiment became known as the 7th Regiment of Virginia Infantry after its colors were redesignated as such by order of General Lee during the American Civil War. It served in many engagements including Pickett's Charge, Second Chancellorsville, Antietam and Fredericksburg campaigns. After the war it continued to serve until it was disbanded on September 8, 1865.
Newport News is a city in the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The population was 46,812 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Hampton Roads, and home to Norfolk Southern Railway's Newport News Terminal. The area that would become Newport News was first settled by English colonists in 1624 as Thimble Island. In 1737, commissioners from London laid out a plan for what would become Portsmouth on Isle of Wight. When the British government decided against developing Isle of Wight, it sold portions of Thimble Island to John Carter for $20 worth of goods and services each. In 1739, Carter donated land for a town on Portsmouth bay called Newport News. On March 24th, 1742, the first school opened in Newport News when Reverend James Pemberton teaching Congregationalists moved from Southampton to establish a new school there. He named it King's Chapel after George II's mother Queen Anne (1727-1802). The city grew rapidly during the American Revolution because of its strategic location as a naval port on Hampton Roads and its connection to supply forces fighting in the war across Chesapeake Bay. During World War II, Newport News played an important role as one of America's largest shipyards with production totaling more than two million planes and tanks per year. The city also became known for its fashion industry thanks to local designers such as Nancy Bennett and Ralph Lauren
