In 1624 Captain John Smith returned to New Netherland and discovered an area which would become Newport News (then known as "Nova Scotia"). He named it after his old home near Bristol in England, where he had lived while completing his survey of North America under Eurico Vespucci two years earlier. In 1629–30 Captain John Smith founded Jamestown Colony on lands acquired from Indian Chief Powhatan at Point Comfort on Yorktown Peninsula within Warwick Parish; here he landed his first wave of colonists including some women and children who became known as Pocahontas' people or "Pequotitans". In 1638 King Charles I granted Partridge Point (near modern Portsmouth) to Pilgrims Samuel Chase and Edward Winslow for their share in founding Jamestown Colony; but Partridge Point reverted back to Warwick Parish when Powhatan died less than year later with no heirs apparent promisingly claiming it for themselves The original Newport News courthouse was constructed between 1734-1736 on Broad Street across from present-day James River Park; it burned down in 1802 during Queen Anne's War but was rebuilt without cost between 1806-1810 aided by local entrepreneur Nicholas Douglass who donated land adjacent to then Federal Road which became today’s Market Street The foundation stones for what would becomeicial Courthouse Square were laid July 5th 1734 by Colonel Christopher Gadsden (founder & first mayor) with much celebration following completion of just one footings ceremony 3 days later On January 1st 1800 the General Assembly convened at Princess Anne’s Palace “in order that all men might be brought before them about public affairs touching their respective jurisdictions” including plans for new magistrates etc….They adjourned until tomorrow night dueto heavy rain so as not too disturbed thru morning hours A large quantity of Tobacco products were also procured There being several bands played Honeysuckle tea being served afterwards…A contract was made between Mr Gadsden & Colleton Esqr [Governor Thomas Jefferson] whereby said square will stand ever since commodious with high benches full thereof throout the pleasure Season viz $6000 per annum payable quarterly
