In 1863, Commodore Samuel Grayson built an ironclad warship called CSS Sumter at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and named it USS Sumter after General Robert E Lee’s old Confederate general friend and business partner who had financed and built the ship for Grayson’s shop at Hampton Roads naval station. The ship served as flagship of Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter during the Civil War which lasted from 1861-1865 and earned her two battle stars for service off both coasts of America. As part of Operation Neptune’s Spear, USS Sumter played a significant rolehvirging blockade runners operating between North Carolina and Georgia during this period USS Constitution Museum: On October 5th, 2009 USS Constitution Museum opened its doors for visitors with displays about all things related to this historical ship including memorabilia from when she operated from Hampton Roads to Guantanamo Bay Cuba during World War II The Daniel Boone House: On November 12th, 2009 The Daniel Boone House located at 309 High Street in Newport News welcomed guests for a day filled with activities such as tours, demonstrations about life aboard Boones Expedition during that time period as well as artifacts from that time period

Newport News, Virginia is a town in Hanover County, Virginia, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Newport News is home to the Naval Academy and Hampton Roads National Military Museum. It is also the site of James River Naval Air Station. Newport News was founded on February 14, 1746 by Captain John Smith as New Light on the James River. The town grew rapidly due to its location within easy reach of both Richmond and Williamsburg. In 1877, it became an incorporated city under the name of Norfolk. In 1954, Newport News absorbed Portsmouth into its municipal government and changed its name to Newport News/Norfolk. On January 1, 1959, Norfolk changed its name back to Newport News/Norfolk again after being failed in an attempt by Mayor Claiborne Pell to change it without the help of a two-thirds majority vote of all city council members (the previous year had been a nonpartisan election). The old name stuck until 1984 when it was reverted back to "Newport News." The city's economy depends largely upon shipbuilding; however other industries have also emerged in recent years such as software development and telecommunications research center Renaissance Technologies Inc.. In fiscal year 2009–10, NewportNews generated $4 million in economic activity from tourism alone including $1 million from cruise arrivals alone), which amounts to about one percent of total local GDP or less than one tenth of one percent of total employment locally based on 2000 US Census data for that period. However this figure has grown rapidly over recent years with visits by foreign tourists now accounting for almost 50% (and rising) of all visitor spending here while jobs related thereto continue grow at more modest rates overall within certain sectors: transportation engineering services are seeing increased work demand due largely to increasing construction projects along I-95 corridor between Norfolk and Fairfax Counties; painting and restoration services provide much needed revenue for many businesses throughout central region including Warwick; tool & die manufacturing provides high tech subcontractors for some major corporations throughout Peninsula area; fishing derby held each month during summertime draw large numbers both outbound visitors (~$20K+) as well as locals who come out specifically for Deals Day!!!

It is also known for its rich history, including many historical sites such as Fort Monroe, Jamestown, Botetourt House and King's Chapel.
