Martinsville, Virginia is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 6,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manassas Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community has been named after General James Martins and his forces who fought in the American Revolution. The first European to visit Martinsville was Captain John Smith on October 22, 1607. He and his men were exploring what is now Prince William County when they came across the Potomac River and its river portage called "Martinsville". Captain Smith's party built a small fort here in 1607-08 during their exploration of the area around Mount Vernon. Colonel George Washington purchased land from Sir Walter Raleigh for $1,500 in 1775 to build President George Washington's home at Mount Vernon. The house still stands today as part of Georgetown University's Arlington Campus. In 1828, Judge Daniel Webster bought 1/2 acre (0.14 km²) of land southwest of present-day Martinsville for $50 with plans to establish a new town there called West Point Village. However, Webster never carried out his plan and the land became part of West Point Battlefield Park instead which remains today one of America's most famous battlefields despite no living residents being registered there since 1999! Today many people visit Martinsville each year for various events such as rodeo shows at Big Sandy Ranch near where early settlers homesteaded in 1838 or Battlefield Day on September 25th when local units from both World Wars battle it out on nearby Yorktown Battlefield Park!

In 1802, Jonathan Belcher purchased a tract of land at present-day Martinsville from George Washington for $4,000 dollars. He began building what is now Belcher Hall on this property, which he named after himself and his wife Annabella MarshallBelcher (1763-1820). Belcher's plantation produced large quantities of tobacco while also providing workers for other plantations in the area. In 1824, James Monroe moved to Martinsville from Staunton with his family to escape military service in Mexico City. Monroe became president of America in 1828 and helped pass legislation ending slavery throughout the United States including passage of The Kansas–Nebraska Act (1854), which opened up Kansas Territory to slavery; and The Homestead Act (1907), which gave ownership of unused public land to American farmers without paying taxes on it
The Martinsville area was long known for its agricultural production, and early settlers in the area were subsistence farmers. In 1811, a group of men from Virginia purchased 4,000 acres (1 km2) of land in present-day Martinsville from the native Algonquian people. The men named the tract "Martinsville" after General James G. Martin who had commandeered a British army during the First Seminole War. The land was used for agriculture until it was purchase by George Washington in 1798. The town of Martinsville began to form around this time, and by 1800, it had a population of about 100 people. By 1814, there were over 1,500 people living in Martinsville and nearby villages. Through trade with other parts of Virginia and Maryland, the town developed a significant economy that supported local businesses and provided jobs for residents. In 1851, Martinsville became an incorporated town under state law. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), Martinsville served as a center for military operations on both sides of the warring states. In 1861, Confederate General Robert Ewell moved his headquarters from Richmond to Martinsville after gaining control of Northern Virginia; he later ordered strategic bombardment campaigns against Union forces at Fredericksburg and ChancellorsVILLE). From 1861-1865, more than 2 million pounds (910 kg) of gold bullion was processed at various facilities located in or near MartINSVILLE
