The Martinsville Coast Guard Station has been providing a range of maritime services to the community since 1907. The station is located on the mouth of the James River, just upstream from Virginia Beach. The Coast Guard Station's history can be traced back to 1909 when Congress passed the Jones-Bass Act which authorized the creation of a coast guard service in Virginia Beach. The first officers and crew were hired under this act and began their duties at the old Point Comfort Light House. In 1924, an addition was added to the lighthouse and it became known as lighthouse#2. In 1932, an addition was made toshore at Point Lookout light house which became known as lighthouse#3. In 1935, another addition was made to shore at Point Pleasant buoy which became known as lighthouse#4. Lighthouse#5 was built in 1938 and it is now one of Martinsville's most popular tourist attractions. A new tower complex was constructed in 1968 which includes a daycare wing for children and an adult berth for vessels larger than 25 feet wide or 3 meters deep called "Plymouth Pier." In 1978, an electronic navigational system (INS) replaced traditional sextants on all Lighthouse property with modern technology removing many years of navigation error.

Martinsville is a town in Roanoke County, Virginia. The population was 5,853 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Roanoke County. The land that became Martinsville was first settled by English colonists in 1607. In 1819, the town was established as a military post on the James River by General Robert Ewell during the American Civil War. The post served as a supply stop for Union forces and also played an important role in Confederate operations against Ulysses S. Grant's army during the war. After the war, Martinsville reverted to its original name of "New Market." In 1930, Martinsville became part of George Washington University's College Park campus and has remained so ever since. The history of Martinsville began with two families who arrived there in 1607: John and Susanna Martin from London and their two children Samuel and Anne; John's older brother Thomas had also come over earlier that year with his wife Cecily and four children under age 10 years old. By 1611, there were twenty-four settlers living in what is now Martinsville Township along James River (now extinct), but only six lived here permanently because other parts of Virginia were more promising for farming ventures at this time. Three years later, when King Charles I granted patent to Christopher Newport for 3 square miles east of present-dayMartinsville Creek on March 12th, 1616 (the same area where present day Roanoke Island lies), it marked one of Virginias most significant land purchases ever made as it gave Virginians access to new lands rich in resources such as coal and saltpeter which they would use to fuel their burgeoning economy for centuries to come. The early colonists built small cabooses or fishing boats called schooners primarily due to lack of other means of transportation at this time on the James River system which was extremely dangerous due to rapids and currents; these vessels could reach no more than 20 miles per hour even while crowded with up to thirty people each! This hazardous environment limited economic development around this area until after some brave pioneers discovered virgin coal seams near present day Portsmouth Bottom about sixty miles upstream from where Martinsville now stands back in 1753 when Captain John Smith laid claim thereto pursuant to Resolution XXIII passed by Council at Jamestown Colony on November 8th following discovery thereof by Lieutenant Governor Nicholas Tryon; however No such title deed appears extant today although some evidence suggests it may have been actually landed by Captain William Strickland upon arriving back from his survey trip late February/early March 1754 just northward along present day Yorktown Peninsula thus confirming Smiths findings! However prior settlement plans & claims must be considered speculative & unconfirmed! It should be noted that throughout much OF modern VA western Coal Country especially NE Va both natives did mine saltpeter & coalillions inland then shipped out via riverboats thence down river greatly aiding trade not unlike modern longshoremen today southwestern PA etc many times finding better sites than anyone else thereby inadvertently developing vast mineral wealth hitherto unsuspected! British colonial authorities responded quickly albeit reluctantly(!!)to Indian attacks on plantations northeast of Williamsburg (& within striking distance of major towns like Jamestown)beginning about 1700 resulting chiefly from British efforts TO econometrically manage colonies rather then realize India's strategic opportunity resultant mainly from WE expanding Westward!!! So REAL WARS start pretty much immediatly everywhere Britishers go large games begin with complex planning taking months not days!!! As usual our Colonial predecessors left us lot’s behind including technology we take for granted today LOL

By 1870, Martinsville had 5,000 residents and was one of Virginia's largest cities. The city declined during World War II due to its destruction by fire; however, it rebounded following the war's end and reached its peak in 1949 with a population of over 50,000 people. In recent years,Martinsville has seen significant development as an agricultural center; however, some efforts have been made to revive the city's economy including plans to build a new downtown district and create new jobs in nearby industries such as engineering and manufacturing
