In 1851, the Manassas Gun Club was organized in Fairfax County, Virginia. The club was designed to provide a place for men to shoot together and learn about firearms. The first meeting of the club was held on October 12th, 1851. In 1865, the club moved to Manassas and changed its name to the “Manassas Rifle Association” (MRA). In 1875, MRA members voted to create a rifle range in the town of Manassas. On July 15th, 1888, MRA members donated land for a new rifle range at Reston Park. On September 8th of that year, MRA members shot their first match at Reston Park. As Winchester rifles became more popular in America and other countries started providing gun ranges with them, MRA members began holding matches at other locations around the world. On February 10th of 1903, MRA members hosted their third annual match at Fair Oaks Golf Course in Fairfax County. This event is considered by many as the beginning of modern muzzleloader hunting history in Virginia. Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 9,827 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest incorporated municipality in Fairfax County and one of the youngest towns in the United States. The town was founded by English colonists in 1755 on a tract of land that had been given to them by General James Longstreet as part of their surrender of Yorktown. The original name for the site, "Manassas Station," was applied because it lay along a wagon road connecting Great Falls with Richmond. The new municipality had four wards which each consisted of three landowners: farmer/residentialist Giles Woodruff (1), blacksmiths’ shop owner David Denny (2), and storekeeper Ebenezer Morse (3). On October 5, 1841, Manassas Township was organized from parts of Arlington County and Fairfax Counties following enactment by Governor James Buchanan via an act entitled An Act for organizing certain Towns in Prince Edward County . On December 1st same year ,the first schoolhouse opened its doors to teach children how to read and write using old schoolbooks which were brought over from Chantilly Parish schools where instruction continued until about 1840 or so; this institution continued until about 1865 when grades were introduced into public schools across Prince Edward County A post office called "Manasse" was established at present-day Hogan Avenue in 1861 concurrent with its establishment at Arlington Heights adjacent thereto; however , no mail ever reached either place due to lack of transportation facilities
