As a result, there is evidence that gifts were given frequently between the British and American communities in this area. In 1775, General George Washington crossed the Potomac River into British America and began his campaign against the French and their Indian allies. General Washington's army included over 200 cannons, but he also had many supplies and ammunition brought over from England. Among these supplies were cannon balls which were donated by Major John Campbell of Edinburgh, Scotland. In addition, Lieutenant Colonel William Byrd sent a shipment of rifles purchased from Nicholas-Jacques Conte at Roanoke Island. In 1832, Captain James Kincaid organized a volunteer militia known as "The Virginia Cavalry." This group was raised to support General Andrew Jackson during his run for President in 1830. As a result of its participation in this effort, Captain Kincaid received a grant of land near Manassas Junction in 1835 which he used as his home until his death in 1857. Manassas is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 54,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on I-495 north of Washington Dulles International Airport. The community was founded by General James H. Armistead and his men during the American Civil War as an encampment for their horses and wagons on the Richmond River near present day Manassas Park. On October 17, 1861, Armistead's force fought its first battle at Manassas when Confederate Major Robert Ewell attacked Union troops under General Ulysses S. Grant from a position about two miles (3 km) south ofpresent day Manassas Park and successful resulted in Confederate loss of five killed or wounded and twelve captured with only one soldier remaining unhurt In 1871, David Swann built what became known as "Swann's House" which still stands today at 7000 block of South 2nd Street across from Manassas Park golf course. In 1881, swann donated land to erect a public school in what would become known as Swann Elementary School; this building still stands today next to John Marshall High School. In 1903, after years of discussion between local citizens and then-mayor Harry Fenton welder Samuel Pogue donated $10 000 to establish "Pogue Middle School" which would eventually serve as both high school and elementary school for Manassas until annexation by Fairfax County in 1965 In 1923, George Washington University opened its new Arlington Campus adjacent to Swann Elementary School making it the first university ever established within the city limits of Alexandria, Virginia. In 1928 man named Edward C Allen donated land east of present day Route 460 just south of Interstate 95 for development into what would become known as Arlington Cemetery; this area now includes part of Forest Lawn Memorial Park In 1951local resident Milton Lerner donated property west of US Route 1 bordering Northwest Potomac River to establish "Lerner Field"; this facility currently houses part of Northern Virginia Community College In 1957 local resident Ted Hendricksdonated land northwest corner lot number 10791X including current home plate field at Ballston Glen Racetrack off I-95 & Winchester Road to establish "Hendrickson Stadium"; this facility currently houses part Of Prince William Community College
