On October 17th, 1861 Lincoln issued a proclamation declaring war on both sides of the issue of slavery- specifically Southern states that did not join the Confederacy (such as Alabama). In response to this decision by president Lincoln(slavery was not a part of Confederate territory), Confederate General Robert E Lee sent an order southward stating that all slaves present within any state which seceded from the Confederacy should be freed without surrender or payment of damages[1]. These orders led to extensive slave catchers’ raids throughout Northern Virginia during November and December 1861[2]. Freeing slaves became one aspect of Rebel strategy during this time period[3]. One result of these raids was significant destruction and loss of property along Route 66 in northern Virginia[4].

Manassas is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 21,857 at the 2010 census. The Manassas River forms the town's eastern border and flows through its center. The settlement became known as Manassas after General Robert Eppes' plantation there in 1825. By 1830, about 95% of all agricultural land in Fairfax County had been developed and development continued until 1870 when transportation improvements made it possible for people to commute to jobs outside of town. In 1871, Manassas was incorporated as a village and reached its peak population of 300 residents in 1901 due to new housing developments such as White Sands Park and Crystal City Shopping Center along I-495 (now U Street). In 1925, Manassas became part of Alexandria upon Alexandria's incorporation as an independent city; however, it retained its own governing body called the Village Council until 1955 when it merged into Alexandria's City Council unit. During World War II more than 12,000 American soldiers were stationed at nearby Fort Totten which also served as an ammunition dump for artillery rounds used by Army Air Forces troops flying over Northern Virginia during World War II; around 2 million rounds were dropped here between 1941-1945 alone. Many munitions shells left behind here resulted in extensive damage to local homes including planking being removed from many roofs leaving exposed lead & asbestos insulation inside now commonly referred to locally just as "the roofing."

The area that is now Manassas was first settled by English colonists in 1624. The name "Manasses" comes from the Powhatan word manah (a kind of tobacco). By 1753, land around Manassas had been purchased by George Washington and his family as part of their landed estate. In 1802, the town site was combined with nearby Alexandria to form Fairfax County. After the war, Manassas reverted to its Indian-era form as an agricultural community with stores and homes for settlers. However, after 1847 there were few remaining residents and only a few scattered buildings remain today. The last resident died in 1956. In 1861, when Virginia became a state, Manassas became one of its five counties. In 1866 it absorbed neighboring Fairfax County into Arlington County while still remaining an agricultural community with stores and homes for settlers; however this period ended when Arlington County incorporated as a city in 1924 Finally in 1956, following the death of its last resident, Manassas surrendered to Arlington County jurisdiction and ceased to exist as an independent municipality
