In 1967, Admiral Chester W Nimitz transferred Command Post Headquarters from Pearl Harbor to Manassas Park and placed it within the newly created Naval Support Activity - Washington (NSAW). NSAW continued to use Fort Myer as its primary headquarters until 1991 when it relocated permanently to Arlington National Cemetery after years of being mothballed there. In 1997, NSAW became part of Commander U S Fleet Activities Washington which is responsible for all naval activities afloat within 35 miles of Anacostia River northward to Georgetown waterfront including Defense Echelon facilities ashore and afloatSonny Boyntown Marina outside Hyattsville with over 100 transient vessels conducting commercial traffic daily along Anacostia River estuary Today's Navy comes from Sailors who have served since 1889 when Commodore John A Bowen organized a squadron of ships called "The Mary Celeste". Manassas Park is a census-designated place in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 17,607 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Northern Virginia metropolitan area. The park occupies land that once housed the White House and now serves as a recreational area for residents of Manassas and nearby jurisdictions. The name "Manassas" comes from General John Forbes' Battle of Fort Nelson on November 3, 1814. After victory over British forces under Lt.-Colonel Isaac Brock, Forbes named his location after General George Washington's headquarters at Mount Vernon. As development increased around Fort Nelson, people began to call the surrounding area simply "Manassas." In 1881, President James K. Polk approved designation of Manassas Park as a national reserve forest preserve to provide hunting and fishing access for American citizens living along the Potomac River watersheds east of Washington D.C.. In 1923, Arlington Heights annexed much of what is now Manassas Park while continuing to maintain its own park jurisdiction within Arlington Heights limits; however it did not annex any other portion of Manassas Park south of Prince Georges Road or east of Interstate 95 (the original boundaries). Consequently, several small communities within Arlington Heights continued to use their own names for parts or all of what is now Manassas Park: Westlake Village (on Woodcroft Road), Glen Allen (near I-95), Fairfax Hills (southwest corner Prince Georges Road), and Takoma Park (northwest corner Prince Georges Road). In 1970–71, an effort by then-Mayor Marion Berry to reestablish unincorporated portions including Takoma Park succeeded in gaining annexation by Fairfax Hills from Arlington Heights; this annexation created Fairfax County’s second largest municipality with a population over 20,000 inhabitants outside of City limits. In 1978–79 Supervisor Lawrence Jaffe sponsored legislation calling for incorporation into Fairfax County under one name or another; no such legislation was passed but some unidentified community groups within Fairfax Hills formed themselves into an incorporated association known as "Takoma" which successfully petitioned the county Board of Supervisors to change their Name to include that word in their organization charter [now known as District 7] on October 1, 1979 - thus completing the process which had begun with Jaffe's suggestion more than two decades earlier On July 12th, 1984 following passage by both housesof Congress[of The United States Constitution] regarding amendments thereto relating thereto[i] – including Section 215(b) concerning Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act – Mayor Marino Berry announced that due process rights had been violated when certain evidence seized during foreign intelligence surveillance operations without probable cause were withheld from her opponents on account they were represented by counsel - subsequently leading to impeachment proceedings against him . On December 6th President Reagan signed Executive Order 12333 dismissing all charges against Mayor MarinoBerry based upon those proceedings . This action effectively ended any further legal challenges against his impeachment proceeding
