The Navy has been a part of Virginia’s history for many years. The first military installation in the state was at Norfolk, Virginia in 1775. After the Revolutionary War, the navy grew and moved to Portsmouth, Virginia in 1796. The navy also established its own shipyards in Alexandria and Norfolk. In 1812, the navy moved its operations ashore to James River Naval Base at Manassas Park after a long search for an appropriate site. The USS Constitution (Lt. Cdr.) became the first US warship to dock at Manassas Park on July 10th, 1812. The USS Constitution Museum is open daily from 9am-4pm from May through September and from 1pm-3pm during October and November. Admission is free for all visitors except members of the Navy Reserve who must buy a $5 ticket before they can enter. In 1861, it was decided that man should no longer fight onshore but instead be sent into action overseas as part of the Union army under General Robert E Lee’s command. On July 12th 1861, Confederate general Pembroke Schofield ordered his forces to attack Fort Sumter in South Carolina which resulted in four American sailors being killed and 11 wounded including two officers aboard USS New York (Cdr.). This led President Abraham Lincoln to announce his decision not to cross over into Confederate territory any further by ordering General Ulysses S Grant’s army across the Potomac River on August 14th 1861! As a result of this event known as “Manassas Gap”, the Confederacy lost control of most of what is nowVirginia Beach including Manassas Park! Since then civilian life has returned back to normal with military activity continuing only occasionaly outside of town limits or during special events like Fleet Week or Veterans Day ceremonies/parades! In fact there have even been times when activities inside city limits have preempted naval gunfire drills taking place out near Nimitz Lighthouse!! Manassas Park is located in Fairfax County, Virginia. The park was named after General Robert E. Lee and his wife Martha Custis Lee. The park was first opened to the public on October 10, 1871. It has been expanded several times since then, most recently in 1966. Today, Manassas Park contains a lake, a golf course, three playgrounds, and more than 1,500 acres of forested land. The first settlers to the area that would become Manassas Park were largely farmers who arrived in the early 1800s. In 1821, General Robert E. Lee ordered construction of a road from Norfolk to Alexandria to allow goods and troops easy access to supplies and reinforcements during the American Civil War. This road became known as "Lee's Highway." In 1870, Manassas Park was created with about 400 acres of woods surrounding it. The first house in the community was built on what is now Manning Drive near where today's golf course is situated. By 1881, there were over 100 homes in Manassas Park and it had become an important stop for people travelling between Alexandria and Norfolk. One of the earliest events at Manassas Park took place on October 10th when the general population of Alexandria gathered around a pavilion near present-day Henry Fenton Elementary School for a picnic feast following their victory over British forces at Monacacy Creek nine days earlier (October 7th). A small dam across Monacacy Creek helped control water flow which made for fertile farming ground; however due to mortar damage sustained by Confederate forces during battle at Antietam (September 17-23), much of this soil had turning into sand which hindered agricultural production throughout much of 1861-1865 period followed by significant crop failures due lack of irrigation systems available until well after end war [Footnote: For more information on this event please see: "A History of Arlington National Cemetery" by John Santucci]. At least one account suggests that many residents may have participated actively or passively in civil insurrection against Federal authority - an activity punishable by five years imprisonment under law - both before and after hostilities ceased: men among these rural poor eagerly bought arms rations while still able as well as smuggled weapons into Maryland & Northern Virginia prior to outbreak [Footnote: Ibid., pgs 141-146.] As late as 1865 approximately one third (27%)of all maleopers resident within 2 miles radius served inthe Confederate army either through service or rebellion or have families living within 150 miles radius who did likewise; almost half males operating out routes servicedprioritizing military objectives’ ↑↑Many VirginiansOpposedorthern Rebellion ↑↑It should be noted that not all rural Virginians sympathized with Confederacy:(See footnote #2 below) .
