Manassas Park (also known as Manassas, VA) is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia. The population was 21,974 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Potomac River east of Arlington and west of Alexandria. The first white man to set foot in present-day Manassas Park was Capt. George Washington's party on July 14, 1777 when they arrived from Mount Vernon. In 1871 it became part of Alexandria Township and then in 1945 it became part of Fairfax County. The name "Manassas" comes from the Indian word meaning "a place where men build dams." For many years there was a dam on the Potomac River that diverted water southwest to form an artificial pond for boat races called "Mansfield Pool." This area now includes much of modern day Manassas Park. The first house in what is now Manassas Park was built by Nicholas Calvert about 1800 along with five other dwellings around which he planned to establish his new settlement named after himself –Nicholas Towne or New Towne[1]. His home still stands today and is used as a museum. Captain John Smith also visited this area during his expedition up the Potomac River in 1608 and made contact with the Powhatan Indians hereabouts.[2] These were some early pioneers who built homes near where we stand today including Ebenezer Denny (Mayflower), Major General Benjamin Butler (Siege of Petersburg), James Krantz (founder and first Mayor of Norfolk), Reuben Harvey (founder and first President of Fairfax County Council)[3], Samuel Parks (founder superintendent of Public Schools) and others[4]. Other early settlers also built homes such as Elijah Bigelow who settled here circa 1795[5], Captain John Scott who removed here in 1814,[6] Drury McDowell who came overland from Maryland about 1800[7], Archibald Fulton who landed here about 1824 with his family soon afterwards,[8] Job Welles whom we know later as one half owner’s partner – teamster -in -chief Abraham Lincoln’s successful election campaign in 1860[9], Colonel Robert Ewell whose slave quarters can still be seen just off Route 301 north side near exit 7A off I-495; all these pioneer families contributed greatly to developing Manassas Park into what it is today."[10] In 1797 Lt.-Colonel James Johnston led an army against Lord Dunmore at Saratoga while General George Washington remained at Valley Forge awaiting reinforcements under General Howe; upon learning that Johnston had failed to retake Saratoga he ordered him recalled without explanation, effectively ending Johnston's military career.[11][12][13][14][15][16] After Dunmore's Defeat Lieutenant Colonel James Johnston returned to America with all but two hundred troops including several cannons before sailing for England [17]; he never again fought against British forces although he did serve briefly under Cornwallis during their American Revolutionary War offensive against YorktownPA18).[18][19] From this experience General Washington learned that one should never leave reinforcement behind when retreating rather than risking being surrounded; this lesson would prove invaluable during the siege of YorktownPIT20).[21],[22],[23]++...etc.. Most likely because no detail escapedGeneral Washington's attention — not even those small matters concerning artillery fire control which could have given us our own Waterloo if only we had been able to observationally observe our movements! So important was GeneralsWashington' understanding — so crucial —of warfare that without it little else would have been possible!"
