The Air Force operates the world’s largest airlift system, with more than 350 jets and aircraft providing support to more than 180 countries. The service is also responsible for the launch of many missiles and warheads, as well as providing air support in all branches of the military. In 1948, when the Air Force was created, it was determined that a gift to commemorate its history would be appropriate. A gift in memory of Colonel James V. “Jimmy” Doolittle – one of America’s most celebrated aviators – was chosen and given to Manassas Park Airport on December 6th, 1948.
