The Lynchburg National Guard was organized on Nov. 17, 1861, in response to the Civil War. The guard served in various capacities through the war, including infantry, artillery and cavalry. In 1865, the guard disbanded due to budget cuts. However, it was reactivated later that year and continued service until 1971.
Lynchburg is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lynchburg County. The adjacent counties of Wise and Frederick comprise the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area, which had a population of 1,951 as of July 2013. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Lynchburg were farmers who arrived from England in 1614. They named their nascent community "Lynchburgh" after James I, King of Scotland and England, who built a fort there to protect his borders during the English Civil War (1642-46). In 1792, when George Washington was inaugurated as President of the United States and took office in Philadelphia, he traveled to Lynchburg to be sworn into office on April 12th. During the American Revolution (1775-83), General Washington's army passed through Lynchburg on their march southward to join General Charles Cornwallis' army at Yorktown. On October 11th (the same day that General Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown), General Washington ordered his troops to retire through Lynchburg gates without being fired upon. This event has been called "The Battle of Trotter's Lane". Aftermath: A second battle occurred two days later when British forces under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewell attacked Patriot lines near earthen forts built by Colonel John Brownell near Halls Gap mountains () about three miles east of town limits (). After an hour-long engagement lasting several hours, Colonel Brownell's force withdrew with no loss suffered by either side; however, Ewell claimed victory and captured many prisoners including local officer William Preston(). Despite this debacle for the Patriots – especially given that Brownell had only eight men against over 100 regular British soldiers – Captain Nathaniel Greene commended him for his bravery after the action (). In 1798–99 a large new courthouse was completed in downtown Lynchburg while other churches were renovated or replaced over time including one known as "The White Sulphur Lady" because its red brick exterior matched that of nearby Mount Vernon House (). One such replacement church was consecrated on November 9th 1802 by Bishop John Sevier Jr., with Reverend James McGowan officiating.. In 1845 another new courthouse replaced an earlier design by Hugh Miller which had become ><%>unsual<%>, causing great outcry among some residents who felt it did not match older architecture or improve public services; consequently a movement began within the town to have it torn down and rebuilt using Second Empire designs. In 1851–52 a large new gymnasium was also erected just outside town limits between Harpers Ferry Road and South Main Street (); it remains today one of most popular tourist destinations in town despite being used primarily for recreational purposes such as basketball and track/field events.

The National Guard was first organized on July 1, 1792, by the United States Congress as a military reserve. The National Guard has played an important role in American history, serving as a crucial part of the federal government and its citizens. The Guardsmen have fought in many wars and during moments of crisis, such as the Civil War and World War II. Today, there are over 16 million national guard members nationwide who serve in various roles including: law enforcement; public safety; disaster response; military service; state and local governments; and private entities. In 2008, the Guardsmen were honored with a presidential proclamation recognizing their contributions to America. National Guard gifts have come from both sides of the aisle throughout history.
