Lynchburg is an unincorporated community in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. It is located on the Northern Branch of the Rappahannock River, next to Mount Vernon National Cemetery. The population was 10,715 at the 2010 census. Lynchburg was founded by George Washington and his army during their October 1775 march from Fredericksburg to Yorktown. The town slowly grew up around its two churches and other public buildings until it became an incorporated municipality in 1871. The center of Lynchburg is a busy commercial district which has grown since it been annexed by the city of Fairfax in 2000. Lynchburg was founded in 1785 by James Lynch and is named for him. The town grew rapidly during the early 1800s, thanks to its location near the border of Virginia and Kentucky. By 1812, the population had reached 10,000 people and by 1820, it had grown to 20,000. In 1825, Lynchtown became a city and remains one today. The town experienced several growth spasms during the late 1800s and early 1900s, reaching a peak in 1901 with a population of 30,000. However, this prosperity didn’t last long – within just ten years, Lynchtown had declined to 15,000 people and lost much of its importance as a center for trade. Today it is primarily known for its historical significance.
Lynchburg was founded as an English colony in 1719, and soon became a major center of the American Revolution. The city is home to the University of Lynchburg and many other cultural attractions.
