The Norfolk Navy Shipyard built the USS Lexington (CV-2) in 1944. She was the first American ship to be equipped with a jet engine and she participated in World War II. The Lexington was decommissioned in 1951, but she continued to serve as an exhibit at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard until 1984. In 1984, she was donated to Leesburg, Virginia by the City of Norfolk. The Lexington is now used as a city hall museum and is open to the public. The Lexington's history begins with her construction in 1944. At that time, America's naval forces were still composed of sailboats and fishing boats. The navy needed a new flagship for its fleet and choicest selection fell on the Lexington because of her jet engine and her ability to travel long distances without refueling. Her launch took place on July 1st of that year and she quickly became popular among sailors around the world. By 1945, she had completed more than 2,000 patrols across international waters and had become one of America's most respected warships. In 1947, she joined Operation Crossroads which aimed to supply North Korea during their war with South Korea. While patrolling off North Korean shores, her engines broke down so she underwent repairs at Chinese port Haiphong; however, this only increased her popularity among Americans because they saw her as a model of reliability during wartime times! After completing repairs back at Norfolk on October 12th, 1947,Lexington set out once again for cross-country patrol; this time under escort from USS Enterprise (CV-6). On November 15th Off Cape Hatteras Island off North Carolina following successful operations against multiple submarines ashore; both ships arrived safely at their destination! This marks only the second time two American warships have escorted each other across international waters – it also markedthe first time either ship had encountered any submarines while carrying out their missions! Leesburg is a town in King George County, Virginia, United States. The population was 6,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Petersburg–Jamestown, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Leesburg was Captain John Smith on his journey from Jamestown to Williamsburg in September 1607. However, the first permanent settler was James Webb who arrived in 1775 and built a house near the present day courthouse on East Main Street. He also named his tract of land "Leesburg." After Webb's death in 1786, his widow married Captain George Washington and they moved there with their families in 1792. In 1814 General Robert Ewell decided to make Leesburg an independent military post after he captured Richmond during the Battle of Yorktown. Ewell ordered that all houses within earshot be burned as evidence that the town would not resist against British forces under General Jackson. In 1864 Union General Ulysses S. Grant abandoned Petersburg for more important tasks and ordered his army to move northeastward along I-95 towards Petersburg unopposed before withdrawing again two weeks later when Confederate General Jubal Early attacked from Longstreet's army at First Manassas Junction leading directly into Petersburg itself without fighting . When Union troops resumed their march through Leesburg on November 3rd they discovered most of the homes had been destroyed by fire led by Confederate Major Ridgely and burning local businesses ensued until December 14th when President Abraham Lincoln called for an end to hostilities and all civilian damage stopped While much has changed over time such as population growth or development around Interstate 95 (I-95) which has caused much congestion within Leesburg it still retains its namesake “The Town On The Creek” which started off as just a small farming community located near where East Main Street meets South Anna Avenue today Leesburg became home to both Confederate Generals Jubal Early & Richard Ewell while being used as a basecamp for operations north of Chesterfieldtown during Battles Of Gettysburg & 1st Manassas Junction respectively before finally falling back into Union hands following Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865

The town is named after James Lees, an early settler and founder of nearby Ellicott City. Leesburg was first established as a small community on the Potomac River near present-day Anacostia Heights in 1834 by John Ladd and his family. In 1836, James Lees purchased land adjoining present-day Leesburg from Nicholas Sparks for $200. He renamed it "Leesburg" in honor of his father-in-law who had helped him purchase the land from Nicholas Sparks. In 1851, Jno Haney organized a farmers' cooperative to raise crops and sell goods along with livestock and straw hats to local merchants in order to support their families during hard times following Washington's Civil War victory over slavery. This type of cooperative would later become known as a "census farm." The C&O Canal was completed through Leesburg in 1854 which made it possible for people living close to the canal to trade product with those living further away on the Susquehanna River or inside Maryland proper; this increased commerce led to more jobs being created throughout Leesville Township including many still today within the scope of public employment that are infrastructure related such as roads and bridges!
