The Leesburg, Virginia National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-known military organizations in the United States. The unit was formed on July 4th, 1776, after the Battle of Saratoga. The first national guard units were stationed in Fredericksburg and Yorktown. Today, the Leesburg National Guard operates 158 companies with a total strength of over 5,000 men and women. They are responsible for providing security and support to local communities throughout Fairfax County and Prince William County. In 1802, the Militia Act was amended to create the National Guard Bureau, which led to the modern day National Guard. The United States Army consolidated all forces under one command in 1865 and called forth all volunteer militias into service as part of General Ulysses S. Grant’s overall strategy for Reconstruction. After Confederate troops surrendered at Appomattox Court House, Virginia on April 9, 1865, all remaining Volunteer Armies were disbanded and turned over to civilian control.
