Leesburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington–Arlington–Alexandria Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by members of the Powhatan tribe in 1607. The first permanent settler in Leesburg was George Mason in 1753 and it became an incorporated village on October 25, 1846. A post office called "Leesburg" was established in 1851, and remained In operation until 1919. In 1865 General Robert Ewell's Confederate army burned down the courthouse and most of the townspeople fled to Norfolk before they were captured by Union forces and brought back to Leesburg to be tried for treason (the trial took place at Fort Monroe). Many of the original settlers still live today within the boundaries of Leesburgtowne Historic District, which has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Leesburg is located at (37.714451, -77.636361). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of 2010, there were 3,811 people residing in Leesburgtowne Historic District: 2% black or African American; 96% white; 1% Asian; 0% Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2%.
The town of Leesburg was founded in 1768 by George Washington and his brothers-in-law, Colonel James Fairfax and Major William Fairfax. The town became an important military post on the Potomac River because it was adjacent to Fort Necessity. In 1814, General Robert E. Lee's army destroyed the fort and captured Leesburg.
