The Leesburg Air Force Base is home to the 9th Fighter Wing. The wing has a rich history that began with World War I. In 1917, on November 11, the 1st Pursuit Squadron was activated at Leesburg and flew Lockheed P-8s until it was disbanded in 1919. In 1942, the USAAF activated the 9th Bombardment Group at Leesburg and flew Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers. During World War II, the wing flew 439 combat missions; lost 36 planes in accidents including one crash that killed all 5 crewmembers on board an airplane returning from a bombing mission over Tokyo. After World War II, the wing converted to jet aircraft and served as an aerial refueling base for MiG aircraft during Vietnam before becoming operational again in 1973 as part of Continental United States Air Force (CONUSAF). It has since been reassigned numerous times with subordinate elements through CONUSAF's components: Tactical Air Command (TAC), Air Forces Europe (AFE), Asia Pacific Command (APC), Unites States Atomic Energy Commission Operations Mission Unit – Japan (USAEUCOMJ), and presently Global Strike Command/First Allied Aerospace Forces Atlantic Area command - which includes operations out of RAF Mildenhall in EnglandSince its activation date 7/1/1942 UASF is currently flying F-15 Eagle Aircraft In 1941 when America entered World War II, there were no plans for a military air force like we have now today. The only thing available to us were bombers flight training school known as Curtiss School of Aeronautics headed by Major General James Allison who had also designed and built what would become our first fighter aircraft - THE RINGER! As America went into war against Nazi Germany they quickly realized they needed more than just bombers to fight their war so they authorized funds for two new bomber wings - one being at Langley AFB Virginia and another being set up at Leesburg AFB North Carolina both under Major General Reno Nye’s command. On September 20th 1941 these new wings became operational under Lt Colonel Arthur Crouch Jr who soon became famous as commander of American Fifteenth Bomber Wing which was stationed at RAF Mildenhall England with his brand new Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Bomber squadron! With this new unit American pilots could finally take on German air forces head on!!! These planes were eventually able to devastatingly defeat any German planes that attempted to fly near or over america! This Mitchell A4N5 “Flying Fortresses” are still considered some of Americas most successful strategic bombers ever! But what about our amazing 9th Fighter Wing? Well forget all about those pesky GIs because back in 1944 they got called into action once again when America started experiencing some difficulties with Japan. At this time Japanese forces had taken control of Manchuria area within China proper making it difficult for american pilots based at RAF Honshu located inside Taiwan Strait if they wanted to operate anywhere within mainland China other than Beijing Airport where Japanese forces were present!!! To make matters worse things seemed hopeless however Majestic Films came up with the brilliant idea of producing a movie about American servicemen fighting during WWII entitled “This Is Your Army” starring Academy Award Winner James Stewart!! Turns out even though everything was going good for American aviation general MacArthur decided he needed more fighter jets so he issued an order activate 1st Fighter Wing located at Leesburg AFB North Carolina operating Lockheed P-38 Lightnings!!!! Needless to say after watching This Is Your ArmyLtCol Crouch re-established his unit back at Langley AFB Virginia!!!!! So much for MacArthur not wanting any USAAF fighters stationed outside mainland China anymore LOL!!] Today we know that air power can be used effectively in many different ways such as conducting airstrikes against enemy targets or providing cover while troops carry outOperation Neptune Spear against ISIS militants! What we didn't know then was how important it was for our military leaders leadership to keep track of how each branch of service related specifically to air power! For example during Operation Neptune Spear MajGen Ernest J McCoy Jr Commander Ninth AF directed all USAF Combat Units involved directly or indirectly contributing thereto via daily reports giving specific instructions on target location, altitude, speed etc......... so you can imagine how excited I am when I find out my favorite Pilot from my 9th FW is deployed overseas!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact just last week I received an email notification from HQ USAF informing me my beloved pilot Jake Wohl will be deploying shortly aboard USS George Washington(CVN 68)to serve as Weapons Officer aboard USS Abraham Lincoln(CVN 72)! Whewwwwwwww cant wait!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Leesburg is a town in Prince William County, Virginia, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Alexandria, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Leesburg was founded in 1752 by Captain John Flott and his wife Rebecca as a small trading post on the Potomac River. The first permanent settler in Leesburg was James Copley, who purchased land from the native Algonquian people in 1762. In 1810, Leesburg became an incorporated town under the name of Alexandria. In 1832 it changed its name to Leesburg Station after General Joseph Hooker's campaign against Native Americans in this area. From 1842 until 1861 it was part of Confederate Virginia during the American Civil War. After the war it reverted to its original name and became an Unincorporated Town again throughout most of the 20th century. In 1970, much of what is now Leesburg were flooded when Floyd Dam failed along with other dams across Prince William County during floods caused by Hurricane Agnes; many homes were lost including those built before Floyd Dam existed The first white persons to live permanently on what would become present-day Leesburg were Seth Burr and his family who arrived from Georgia in 1776 They started a small cabin onsite which they continued to use until 1802 when they moved away due to Indian hostilities nearby Also known for their pioneering work there was Colonel George Washington Pickens who built one of two sawmills operating within sight today (the other being located in Arlington) near where US Route 11 crosses I-95 just south of downtown . He also laid out roads that led into present day Lee's Ferry Landing and White Marsh Creek . Other early settlers include Reverend Nathaniel Bacon (1797–1864), Samuel Morse (1804–1865), Lewis Noyes (1809–1868), John Bridge (1792–1850), Benjamin Banneker (1796–1871) and Joshua Coffin Wormley (1798–1857). By 1830 there were over 1,000 residents living within what would become Leesburghtown limits...residential development rapidly increased with mills mounting such as Elijah Littlejohn's sawmill opened on Main Street right in front of our current courthouse around 1830 followed by various stores/ mercantile businesses like Jno & Phebe Singleton’s store on Broad Street between High Street and Hermitage Road soon after which lead directly onto King Street leading uptown whence Sundays could be enjoyed tranquilly outdoors without any worry about getting involved with traffic or having business meetings inside... until about 1870 when things took a drastic turn for the worse with several large stores closing down one by one practically taking out entire blocks leaving only single story rowhouses left standing overnight! This process continued unabated until about 1900 when brick buildings began replacing wooden structures completely making way for shopping malls etc., thus effectively ending all independent local commerce within city limits once again! Leesburg was founded in 1743 by George Washington and named for his father-in-law Colonel James Lees. The first post office in the town was called "Leesborough" and opened on December 12, 1807. The town became an agricultural center during the early 1800s due to its location along the Potomac River. A cotton mill and sawmill were built in 1824 and 1827 respectively; these mills continued to operate until they were replaced by steam engines in 1901. The town also became home to several stores and factories during this time as well as several churches including First Baptist Church (1832), Methodist Episcopal Church (1835), Presbyterian Church (1841), Catholic church (1850) and Elks Club House (1902). In 1909, a new courthouse was built downtown which served as the town's government center until it was destroyed by fire in 1916. Leesburg experienced significant growth following World War II with the construction of numerous homes, businesses and other facilities such as a high school, military barracks and airport. Afterward, there were few major changes to its infrastructure until the mid-2000s when new development began encroaching upon older neighborhoodsGiardini Terrace/Naylor Lane through which much of Leesburg's history has been passed down from its original residents
