Herndon is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 30,711 at the 2010 census. The initial settlement of the town was made up of two small settlements: Herndon Heights and Herndon Station. In 1827, the townsite was combined with that of Glenburne to form Fairfax County. The name "Herndon" comes from an Indian word meaning "a place where deer roam." The first settler in Herndon was John Herndon who came to this area in 1798 with his family. His brother-in-law James Robertson built a cabin on what is now Middle Road near modern day College Park. By 1800, there were around 20 settlers living in or near Herndon Heights and about 10 residents living at Herndon Station. In 1827, the townsite of Glenburne was combined with that of Herndon to form Fairfax County because it became apparent that both towns had potential for growth. At that time there were only a few small farms within Fairfax County and it would have been difficult for each individual farmer to expand their holdings much beyond their current acreage. Accordingly, by merger, both villages received equal representation in the new county government and began to develop as separate communities with their own businesses and services. The first post office in Herndon opened on October 21, 1829; however, it remained open only until February 4th of 1831 due to low GNR (gross national product) levels at that time which limited postal service’s ability to provide necessary goods and services efficiently across rural areas like herding country across state lines back then! One interesting fact about early times when mail deliveries took place by wagon between these two villages is that not all items sent through Postal Service were delivered either way!
