The town was founded in 1792 by white settlers from Maryland and Delaware who named it after George Herndon, an Englishman who had married one of their number. The first courthouse was built in 1802. In 1813, the town's charter was amended to allow for slavery and it became a slaveholding state until Richmond repealed its ordinance against slavery in 1865. The main shopping district in Herndon is called "The Square". There are also several small businesses located throughout the squares area that serve primarily local residents or visitors. Herndon,Virginia is a town in Loudoun County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,852 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Greater Washington D.C. metropolitan area. The first settler in Herndon was John Herndon who arrived in 1775 and named it after his friend of thirty years James Herndon. However, the first white person to live there may have been George Mason who built a cabin on an old Indian tobacco plantation near present-day Fairfax County in 1776. In 1802, Colonel John Taylor set up a school and store here for the poor people of Loudoun County as part of his program known as "Taylor's Purchase." In 1811 he laid out this portion of Loudoun Creek Valley from Fairfax Court House to Resten Road westward and began to name all these sections which |he had surveyed: Arlington Heights (now Arlington), Centreville (later Chantilly), Fairfax Station (now Falls Church), Friendship Heights (later Alexandria), Highland Park (now Manassas Junction). He also laid out Bladensburg Road from Resten Road eastward to Kelly Mill Pond where he now stands; it became part ofroute 66 later that year when that highway was established by Congress as part of the National road system. In 1813 General Robert Ewell founded New Market Academy here while still headmaster at Huntingdon College near Potomac Mills; he soon moved its operations to Alexandria so that its students could receive their education close to home with no travel required between schools. From then until 1865 there were 24 principals or headsmasters associated with New Market Academy; today only two remain – Professor Milton Hamerman and Betty Drury Schieffer – and one other student body member has since retired: Mrs Jane Addams Garrison Krieger. In 1861 General Orders No 1 completed President Abraham Lincoln's plan for Union generals under military command in Central America; they were initially called "the Twenty-Third Regiment" but due to weariness changed their designation on November 5th following mass desertions by their officers into "the First Confederate Regiment". That same month General Order No 2 disbanded Confederate forces east of Richmond; however because large numbers had deserted within Virginia they were reorganized as the Second Confederate Brigade which eventually joined Grant's army during battle at Petersburg on April 12th 1865 On October 8th 1870 Averill Harriman organized what became known as "The Herndons" company - made up largely of Virginians - for service against Apache Indians along the Arizona border led by Captain Ulysses S. Grant At this time Jimmie Steele formed Company C from men remaining behind from Harriman's battalion numbering about 350 men mostly Virginians including future presidential candidate James Buchanan
