Herndon, Virginia is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It is the county seat of Fairfax. The population was 10,852 at the 2010 census. Herndon is part of the Richmond-Northern Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1749 by French settlers from Canada as Fort George Washington on land claimed by Captain Johnostowne. The name "Herndon" came from a man named Hendrick who explored the area in 1676 and thought it might be a good place to settle after hearing about English settlements in what is now Arlington County. In 1781, General James Moore established a post at Herndon and named it for himself after his home state of Maryland. The first settler here was Major John Herndon who arrived in 1781 with his family and built a log cabin near present day Upperville Road. In 1801, Colonel Isaac Brockman developed part of present day Alexandria and moved his family to Herndon so they could join him there when he became an officer with the American army during the War of 1812. When Brockman died suddenly in 1814, his widow decided to move her family back to their original location near Upperville Road where they remained for many years until they were forced to leave due to raids by Native Americans led by Chief Powhatan II. In 1846, some colonists emigrated to California via steamboats on behalf of abolitionist Aaron Burr and settled at Point Loma on San Francisco Bay before returning eastward along the coast overland through Oregon into Mexico City as part of Burr's secret trip aimed at achieving independence for Mexico while avoiding detection by European authorities. Upon Burr's death at Monterrey on April 14th that year, most of his small group including two women and children (the only ones besides Burr known about) continued eastward into Mexican territory under assumed aliases until reaching Pueblo de las Cruces late that summer before finally making landfall near Santa Fe de Chihuahua on July 5th where they remained hidden for three weeks before being detected by Mexican forces leading an attack against Pueblo de las Cruces which resulted in all but one woman (the mother) dying from exposure en route; she had managed to make it back home just ahead of their enemies).
