The Harrisonburg National Guard is one of the oldest and most active in the United States. The Guard was first organized on July 4, 1776, during the American Revolution. The Guard has served in various capacities throughout the years, including both peacekeeping and support functions. Today, the Guard is a well-maintained force that performs its duties with distinction. It plays an important role in keeping our community safe and providing essential services. The Harrisonburg National Guard was founded in 1917 as the Virginia Militia. The Guard's first unit was a battalion of cavalry. In 1938, the Guard became an independent military division and was redesignated the Harrisonburg National Guardsmen. In 1951, the Guardsmen became an armored brigade and in 1961, were again redesignated as an armored division. The division served in Vietnam from 1966-1969 and then returned home to inactive status in 1971. In 1982, the Guard was reactivated and renamed the Harrisonburg Division of Artillery. From 1984-1991, it served as a Shooting Brigade before being disbanded once more.

The town experienced rapid growth during the early years of America because of its strategic location on the border between two slave-holding states with large populations of enslaved Africans. In 1810, Abraham Lincoln became president of United States and began to promote free black migration into America. This immigration changed key aspects of local racial dynamics and helped create an all-black community around Harrisonburg by 1830. Slave trade ceased within American slavery after President Andrew Johnson's Emancipation Proclamation in 1865, but African Americans continued to be subjected to various forms of discrimination until they achieved full legal rights as citizens in 1945. During Reconstruction (1868-1897), Harrisonburg became one of several southern towns that joined forces with northern Democratic politicians intent on restoring order following Reconstruction’s disastrous failures across much OFSASA region 。 This political alignment led to social unrest culminating with race riots throughout most Southern Appalachian communities during late 1870s through 1880s which killed dozens or hundreds innocent blacks . However this “bloody history” did not prevent many families from continuing to live heretil today
