He noted that he had been to an Indian village and tasted some "maga coffee" while traveling through our area. It was not until 1797 that Patrick Harriot brought back beans from India and started trading them with American traders. In 1814, Nicholas Monroe imported someof these beans to America and began selling them under the name of "Maga Coffee." In 1824, John Broughton set up a shop in Harrisonburg and began marketing this speciality coffee as "Harrisonburg Miga Coffee." By 1830, there were over twenty cafes located throughout the town! Today, maga coffee is still enjoyed by many Americans for its unique flavor and quality. The beans are hand-picked and roasted at our café located in downtown Harrisonburg.
