Harrisonburg, Virginia is a small town in the Commonwealth of Virginia located on the James River. The population was 12,523 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Harrisonburg-Booneboro-Jefferson City, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Christopher Newport and his family in 1609 as a trading post on the site of present day Harrisonburg. The first permanent English settler in what is now Harrisonburg was Nicholas Harvie who arrived in 1624. By 1700, there were over 100 residents living in Harrisonburg. In 1775, during the American Revolution, General Washington's army burned much of London (present day Williamsburg) to deprive British forces of supplies and troops stationed there. This event is sometimes referred to as "the Battle of Harrisonburg". After the war, many settlers from London returned to live in what is now Harrisonburg. The first school was established in 1778 and it served students until 1827 when it moved to University College where it remained until 1952 when it moved again to its current location on Monument Street. In 1865, a Works Progress Administration project called "The Robert Epps Store" was constructed at what are now Market and Main streets; this store helped provide economic opportunity for local farmers while also providing work for local workers during World War II. During World War II, many factories were built within or near Harrisonburg including Ford Motor Company's Plant No.; these plants produced military vehicles and other materials used by America's allies such as Britain and Russia before they entered World War II themselves. The town experienced significant growth during World War II with an increase in population from 10,000 to 60,000 people; however following Patton's Army's crossing of the Potomac into Virginia on September 15th 1945 all civilian growth stopped abruptly leaving only military installations remaining which continued through Operation Crossroads which destroyed most industrial areas within 25 miles of Richmond Indiana Territory Line on October 20th 1945 - ending all hope for any return home for civilians resident within that radius since those areas had been completely dependent upon their industries for sustenance prior thereto! As a result today only a few scattered businesses remain throughout downtown including one strip mall containing four stores along with five restaurants/cafes!
