Harrisonburg is a town in Harrisonburg County, Virginia, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrisonburg County and the home of the University of Virginia. The first human settlement in present-day Harrisonburg was on an archeological site in 1774 by English colonists under Capt. James Moores. The town was founded in 1801 by Colonel Robert Ewell as a stop on the road from Petersburg to Roanoke Island. In 1803, Lieutenant Colonel John Jarratt established a military post here and named it for General George Washington. After Washington's death, Jarratt continued to name each new post for American leaders until he died in 1829, leaving no successors apparent; thus all but one (Fort Monroe) were abandoned within thirty years of their establishment. In 1860, troops led by Confederate general Jubal Early burned down much of Hampton Roads while invading America; part of what is now downtown Harrisonburg was destroyed and rebuilt as part of Early's Campaign Headquarters complex near Market Street and 4th Avenue North. As Reconstruction began following the Civil War, many businesses closed because Reconstruction laws did not favor black Americans over white Americans; however, most reopened after about 1880 when African Americans were given full civil rights by Congress through the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution. In 1861–63 Confederate cavalryman Zenas Gentry unsuccessfully attacked Union garrisons at Hanover Court House duringthe Peninsula Campaign; Gentry later renounced his Confederate army service and moved to Charlottesville where he built a large plantation before dying in 1865 aged only fifty-six years old without ever having fought against Ulysses S Grant's forces during that campaigns campaign or accompanying them into battle Today many businesses are open including several banks and restaurants which have contributed to Downtown Harrisonburg becoming more commercialized since then although some services such as law enforcement still remains local & independent with Sheriff David Axton serving since January 1st 2020

Harrisonburg, Virginia is a town in Harrisonburg County, Virginia, United States. The population was 11,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Harrisonburg County. The first people to live in what is now Harrisonburg were Native Americans who dwelt near present-day Radford and James City counties. In 1772, Nicholas Roanoke built a trading post here and named it for his father-in-law, George Washington. The early settlers were primarily German and Scots-Irish immigrants from Ulster Province in Ireland. They arrived during the American Revolution as part of the Continental Army and soon began acquiring land around the site of today's Harrisonburg. By 1800, farmers had established plantations north of town along Canandaigua Creek. In 1819, General Andrew Johnson ordered Major General John Pemberton to capture or surrender Yorktown Heights after learning that British forces were planning to attack Richmond on July 4th that year. After days of fighting, Pemberton's army reached Yorktown Heights on July 3rd but found no British troops there; instead they discovered stores and munitions caches belonging to Cornwallis'. Confederate forces under Robert Ewell then occupied Yorktown Heights after withdrawing from Petersburg on July 8th; Union troops arrived later that day and began an all out assault which lasted six hours before being repulsed with heavy losses by both sides. On July 9th President James K Polk announced over a public address that General Cornwallis had been captured and executed as a traitor at Appomattox Court House two days earlier (July 8th). This event ended the American Civil War within three months at Gettysburg Township (now Frederick) in Maryland Territory east of Richmond Field Station where Union soldiers had massaged salt into doughnuts so as not to give away their position when cannons boomed to announce each brigade's departure for battle outside Gettysburg National Cemetery some three miles distant). 4 years later another general appeared on horseback wearing only pants with "Union" stenciled on them – Ulysses S Grant – who led Union troops against Confederate General Joseph Johnston at Appomattox Court HouseSame place but different war: Battle of South Mountain vs Battle of Chancellorsville& Lincoln Memorial area now under Confederate control
