Harrisonburg is a town in Johnson County, Virginia, United States. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is the third most populous community in Johnson County after Lynchburg and Roanoke. The Harrisonburg Historic District is a national historic district located in the town. The first permanent European settlers to what is now Harrisonburg were Captain John Smith and his group of more than 50 men who journeyed from Jamestown on April 14, 1735, seeking passage to North America on an Intrepid Enterprise commanded by Captain George Washington. They camped for two weeks near present-day Harrisonburg before continuing their journey on foot through hard-packed mountain soil west of Williamsburg to Charlottesville. Upon their arrival at Yorktown on July 10, 1738, they were welcomed as liberators by General Robert Ewell and his troops garrisoning that part of Prince Frederick's County which later became Fairfax County. After years of growth and development during the antebellum period (1811–1865), it was only during World War II that much of downtown Harrisonburg came into existence as businesses erected new buildings and expanded their operations into nearby neighborhoods such as Highland Park and Blacksville. However, many old businesses closed over time due to competition from modern facilities or because the owners could not keep up with technological advances; however one notable exception was the original Sears department store which still stands today within walking distance of most residents but has been abandoned for many years now due to increased competition from closer mall stores. The area that now makes up Harrisonburg was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century, and by the early 18th century, it had become an important trading post between British colonists and the Cherokee Nation. In 1781, while fighting during the American Revolution, General George Washington and his army passed through Harrisonburg on their way to battle at Yorktown. As a result of this event, Harrisonburg became one of America's key military communities during its early years. After the war ended in 1783, many of the British troops who had fought in it returned home. This period saw some significant changes for Harrisonburg: It became known as a center for political activism under Governor James Ketchum; it became known for its impressive architecture; and it began to experience growth as a commercial center. By 1801, however, things were looking bleak for Harrisonburg: Its economy had collapsed due to competition from larger towns like Richmond and Norfolk; its infrastructure was starting to wear down; and its population was beginning to dwindle due to immigration from Europe. However, within just 10 years, all these problems had been overcome thanks to new arrivals from abroad: Italiansbeginningto arrive in large numbers in the 1840s; Irishmen coming over after Famine-era famine killings in Ireland; and Germans arriving during World War I (which led to an increase in businesses). During this time frame, too, there were also some significant changes take place within Harrisonburg itself: It became socially more open than ever before; women started working outside of homes beginning in earnest around this time; religious denominations began opening their own churches hereabouts; and art began becoming popular here – particularly among young people who were drawn to ideas of artistic expressionivism (a type of modernism) at this point in history. Despite these various factors – both good AND bad – overall life here continued relatively unchanged until shortly before World War II began which brought about dramatic changes once again.
