In 1892, Harry Browne founded Browne's Coffee House in Hampton Roads. This was the first smallbatch coffee house in Hampton Roads and is still open today. Browne's Coffee House became one of the most popular smallbatch coffee stores in Virginia because of its unique atmosphere and wide variety of craft beverages. In 1954, Maxwell Place opened in downtown Hampton as one of the first convenience stores with a smallbatch espresso station inside. Maxwell Place was known for its fresh brewed coffee and local artwork on store walls. Maxwell Place closed in 2000 but it is still remembered as one of the earliest places that people started buying smallbatch espresso drinks.

Hampton was founded in 1757 by Captain John Smith and his men as a trading post on the James River. The town was named for General George Washington, who had arrived there earlier that year to lead the American Expedition against British forces. The town grew rapidly and by 1810 it included a courthouse, public square, schoolhouse, two churches, and a population of around 1,500. Hampton quickly became an important commercial center in the region and its citizens were known for their production of hay, tobacco products, cottonseed oil, and other goods. In 1827 the town provided one-seventh of Virginia's congressional delegation when it voted to secede from the United States. Afterward Hampton continued to grow but struggled during the economic depression of the 1830s. However, after passage of the Kansas–Nebraska Act in 1854 which granted land west of Missouri to Texas settlers, Hampton regained some prominence as a lumbering community. Although Hampton had slipped out of favor during the late 19th century due to its numerical insignificance within Virginia despite its growing population and commerce however it experienced a revival in popularity beginning in the early 20th century due to new development within its borders including Hamptonshire County Airport (now Norfolk International Airport) which opened in 1918 and later became home to America's first air traffic control tower;Hampton Coliseum which served as home field for both American football teams at Richmond University from 1923 until 1951;Hampton Golf Course which opened in 1929;and finally Hampton Place developments such as Gateway Village located along Interstate 95 between Winchester and Harrisonburg providing new housing units along with health care services and Small Business Development Centers (SBDCs). These new developments have helped rebirth interest inHAMPTON while also contributing importantly to current local economy.
