Hampton is a town in Prince Edward County, Virginia, United States. The population was 3,621 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Prince Edward County. The first permanent settler in what is now Hampton was John Burgess in 1784 and he named the town after his home parish, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church on the eastern edge of present day Hampton Roads. In 1814, General Robert Ewell established Fort Ewell here to protect traders moving through what became known as "the Nations Neck" area north of Petersburg and east of Williamsburg. In 1815, Colonel Nathaniel Clay moved from Alexandria to form a brigade under General Thomas J. Blair to help defend against Creek Indian attacks south of Richmond during the American Civil War. After Confederate forces destroyed Fort Ewell on July 4, 1865 following an eight-day siege by Union forces under General Ulysses S. Hampton, Virginia is a small town in Prince Edward County, Virginia. It was founded in 1757 as a result of the merger of two other villages, Hampton and Yorktown. The present-day town was established in 1847 when the village of Yorktown was merged into Prince Edward County. It is located on the banks of the Potomac River and has a population of about 41,000 people. The first human habitation in what is now Hampton occurred around 10,000 years ago. The area where Hampton now stands was first settled by Algonkian Indians who lived near what is now Arlington National Cemetery. In 1608, King James I gave land to John Smith for his service in the English Civil War. After Smith's victory at Saratoga Bridge, James awarded him 2 square miles (0.8 km2) of land on the south side of the Potomac River for his loyal services during that conflict. This land became known as "Jamestown." In 1757, settlers from several villages pooled their resources to form a new settlement called "Yorktown." The new village was named after General George Washington's birthplace – Yorktown,irginia – which had been destroyed by British forces during the American Revolution. Construction began on the original hamlet's courthouse and schoolhouse within weeks of its founding. By 1800, Yorktown had become an important military outpost and trading center between America and Great Britain due to its location on Fort Necessity (later renamed Fort McHenry). The growth of Hampton led to increased development within it and outside it over time; this included building roads and bridges, draining swamps adjacent to various plantations bordering the riverbend where Hamptons were located until they were developed into residential areas such as Crystal City and West Point Hillsborough near West Point Naval Academy; as well as constructing numerous commercial buildings including two churches – one built by Virginians Thomas Jefferson whose family owned one half interest in Yorktown Village; also constructed were four stores - one carried goods for local farmers while another served as a bakery; three blacksmiths - one operated out-of-the-way on Court Street; two tanneries - both operated out-of-the-way on Church Street at opposite ends of town; seven shops - all carrying goods imported from England or Europe while four served primarily local needs such as groceries or millinery;; six houses - erected mainly around Court/Church Streets with some along Forest Avenue close to Greenbelt Creek.; many more private dwellings but these have not been preserved nor are they currently being documented
Hampton was first settled by the Pocahontas people in the early 17th century. The town was founded on a small island in Hampton Roads, Virginia, and grew quickly due to its strategic location and rich natural resources. In 1801, after the United States acquired control of Norfolk County, Hampton became part of that county. In 1924, Hampton was renamed for General George Washington after his death.
