Hampton, Virginia is an archaeological and historical district in the southwestern corner of Virginia. The area that became Hampton was originally a part of Elizabeth City County and was then divided between Norfolk County and James City County. In 1819, Norfolk County was combined with James City County to form Wise County. In 1851, Wise County was divided into two new counties, Roanoke Island District and Prince Edward Island District. Prince Edward Island District became part of Hampton in 1952. The first Europeans to visit what is now Hampton were French traders in the 16th century who named it "Bouillon" for a nearby body of water. The English explorer John Smith discovered the area in 1607 while exploring the southern coast of North America. He named it "Hampton" after Lord Ashley's manor house at Tisbury in Hampshire, England. The first permanent European settlement in what is now Hampton was made by Rev John Walton on Roanoke Island during Captain William Cooke's expedition in 1724-25 as part of the failed attempt to establish a British colony on North American shores. On return from his trip he reported finding fertile land here but no one came looking because no one wanted to risk being lost among the numerous islands off Cape Fear Mountains during this time period trying to find entrance into North America through those mountains. In 1729-30 William Byrd II explored and mapredized much of present day Hampton Roads region which lay northwest of Jamestown Colony proper including today's Newport News/Norfolk metropolitan area; he called it "Newport News Neck". A few years later Bedford Randolph built a small fort on Westminster Point opposite modern day Portsmouth Naval Base just south of Albemarle Sound where he stored supplies for his journey upriver to New York via Elizabethtown River (now called James River). Randolph also built a small mill on the point which still stands today within easy walking distance of present day Portsmouth Naval Base although its building has long been demolished; Randolph also founded Baptist Church here which still stands today as well as First Presbyterian Church next door (the only church remaining from our original village). After Randolph's death his widow laid out what is now downtown Portsmouth with many fine houses along Trade Street beginning about 1750s (modern day downtown Portsmouth) when this section began developing rapidly as lead smelting center due to increased shipping traffic along bothrivers leading directly across Albemarle Sound from old Richmond through present day Suffolk and Caroline Counties en route upriver to Philadelphia via Delaware Bay; trade between these areas continued until at least 1800s when development stopped due mainly to technological advances like steamboats which made transportation more efficient than sailing vessels
Hampton was founded in 1609 by English settlers. It became a part of the Virginia Colony in 1624 and the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1776. The town's first courthouse was built in 1639. In 1801, Hampton was incorporated as a city. It became an independent municipality within the Commonwealth of Virginia on July 1, 1949.
