Hampton, Virginia is a small town located in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It was founded in 1724 by Captain John Smith and his crew on the Roanoke Expedition. The town was named for General James Hampton, who fought in the American Revolution. In 1864, Hampton was incorporated as a city. In 2006, Hampton became an independent municipality. It is generally agreed that the national guard was first organized in 1792. On July 4, 1792, the Second Continental Congress created a national guard of 10,000 men to protect Americans during the American Revolution. The guard was disbanded after just one year and does not appear in any records until 1802. The first national Guard regiment was raised on October 14, 1802 and served for three years before being disbanded. It is unknown why this particular regiment did not stay long enough to create a permanent National Guard corps. The first permanent unit of the National Guard was raised on December 15, 1812 when President James K. Polk authorized the raising of 8500 soldiers under the command of General Andrew Jackson to support his war efforts with Mexico. The Army of Tennessee soon became known as the “National Guard” due to its affiliation with both President James K Polk and General Jackson. On September 25, 1861, Governor John Hays called forth military forces from all over America to participate in the American Civil War against Confederate States of America (CSA). On November 7th Governor Hays ordered all male citizens age 21 or older who could bear arms into military service without payment of taxes into militia companies organized along state lines within 72 hours or they would be liable for imprisonment and fines up to $5000 per individual. These militias were quickly renamed as regiments or brigades under different commanders and participated in various engagements throughout November and December 1861 before finally becoming permanently attached to Union armies on January 1st 1862 after Lincoln declared war on Confederate States of America. Aftermath: After the surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865 all units mustered out by their commanding generals became veterans subject to home occupation laws which limited their rights as citizens United States soldiers returning home from war (known as “bona fide veterans”). By 1850, Hampton had reached its peak population size with over 10,000 residents living in scattered villages around what is now downtown Hampton Beach Boulevard. However, as America entered into an era of industrialization and mass Migration during this time period there were major changes taking place throughout much of North America which had a significant impact on Hampton specifically; these changes led to declines in jobs available within local businesses while increasing competition from other towns throughout Virginia along with advances being made within industry itself which led to more joblessness among black workers across much of America during this time period known collectively as "the Great Migration." This migration resulted in large numbers of African Americans moving westward intopredominately white areas such as California where they worked on farms or construction jobs before reaching ultimate success through integration into western society once they arrived there (Ferguson). As per Ferguson: "It [thegreatmigration] transformed [Hampton] from little more than an agricultural stopover on one side of the peninsula into one of Richmond’s most dazzling city neighborhoods" (p 5).
