Hampton is located in the Eastern Shore of Virginia and is the largest city in Hampton Roads. The population of Hampton was 298,812 as of 2016. The city was founded on May 25, 1788 by Captain John Smith and his group of nine men while they were exploring the area. It became a town on December 12, 1802. In 1865, it became a city and was renamed after General Robert E. Lee. The population grew to 479,752 by 2000 and 527,464 by 2015. The primary economic activities in Hampton are tourism, manufacturing, transportation and services. There are also small businesses that operate within the general economy outside of tourism and manufacturing industries. The City Council is responsible for guiding the city through its day-to-day operations while Mayor Randolph Weise chairs the Economic Development Committee which provides advice on economic development initiatives for the city

Hampton, Virginia is located in central Virginia and is one of the oldest towns in the area. The town was founded by James Armistead in 1699. After Ulysses S. Grant became president, he granted Hampton autonomy and a charter from the Commonwealth of Virginia to become an independent city. The city experienced growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its location on Route 235 between Richmond and Norfolk—two of America's most important transportation corridors. The city also hosted several major events such as the Hampton Roads International Air Show in 1984 and the Virginian-Pilot Fair in 1992. By 2000, however, Hampton had started experiencing significant decline due to changes at nearby Petersburg which has led to more jobs being sent away from Hampton while also reducing housing prices within miles of the city center. Today, Hampton remains a small town with few residents over 50 years old; however, it continues to play an important role in regional politics due to its history, economy, infrastructure development, and ability to support large events like the UVA football game or NASA's "Innovation Summit."
