The Coast Guard has been in Hampton Roads for over 100 years. The Coast Guard was created on April 12, 1915 when the Virginia State Militia was called into action to help protect the coast of Virginia from raiders and pirates. The Coast Guard today is made up of more than 10,000 men and women who work together to keep our Narragansett Bay open and safe. One of the first gifts given to the Coast Guard by individuals in Hampton Roads was a set of binoculars. In 1923, a gift certificate was given to members of the Hampton Roads Yacht Squadron for purchasing new yachts. In 1941, a set of charts were gifted to the Coastal Defense Unit at Fort Monroe. These charts showed how different areas around Hampton Roads could be used as defense against enemy ships or submarines. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has received many donations from individuals in Hampton Roads. Some examples include: a land management system for Portsmouth; two Bell helicopters; five lifeboats; two patrol boats; three tugboats; and four fishing vessels. The Hampton Roads Coast Guard was established in 1795. The present coast guard service is the result of a merger of several predecessor agencies that were founded during the 1800s.
Hampton is a town in Virginia, United States. The population was 21,594 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hampton County. The town is located on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and bordered by Richmond to the north and east, Newport News to the south and west, and Norfolk to the northwest. The eastern border of Hampton is defined by Interstate 95; it forms an abrupt curve to the south-southwest near its junction with I-64 before turning northeast again towards Portsmouth. The area that now makes up Hampton was first settled in 1755 by colonists from England who were seeking new land for their descendants after Plantation Day (April 15). In 1777, during General William Howe's campaign against George Washington, part of Hampton became a strategic stop on his march through Virginia. After victory over Washington at Yorktown in 1881, control of Hampton passed to VA government as a result of passage of the Appomattox Bill which ended the American Revolution. In 1941, Hampton was named one of "50 Places That Made America", recognizing its community spirit and contributions to American culture. On October 12th 1861, three days after Confederate forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina, Union artillery opened fire on Confederate headquarters at Yorktown Castle in what became known as "theaters around Charleston" bombardment preparatory for an all out effort to take that city two weeks later under orders from Ulysses S Grant III himself. This engagement resulted in 9 dead including 5 officers commanding HMS Warrior when she triedEMBLYto cross into SC against orders Of particular note are 2 small cannons found just outside modern day Stonington Mall off US 395/VA 276 - these are believed to have been used in this engagement!

In 1907, Hampton incorporated as a city.
