In 1882, a man named Isaac Pope opened a small bakery on Main Street that served bread and pastries. It was here that Front Royal’s first coffee shop began serving coffee. Over time, other businesses joined The Coffee House (such as The Grocery Store), and by 1914 there were five shops in town selling coffee. By 1935, Front Royal had so many cafes that it decided to create its own marketing campaign to promote its café culture with posters and flyers around town. During World War II, the local post office closed for two weeks due to an overabundance of military supplies – this leftFront Royal without its favorite source of caffeine! However, business picked up quickly once again when the post office reopened. After the war ended, the cafés slowly stopped opening until 1983 when they finally merged into one establishment under one name – Starbucks. Front Royal, Virginia is a small town in Prince William County, Virginia. The population was 7,827 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Petersburg–Fallston, VA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in what is now Front Royal was made on December 12, 1746 by Major Robert Randolph and Major James Smith as part of the larger project to establish a new colony in what would eventually become Virginia. The two men were joined by twelve others from Jamestown who had also left for this new land. The original settlers were primarily farmers with a few tavernkeepers and artisans among them. They built homes around an old courthouse square which they called "the Square". In 1768, frontiersman John Carter arrived with his family and started trading goods with the Indians. He soon became known as "Jocasta's Hardy Men" because of his toughness and tenacity in meeting challenges both inside and outside of Front Royal. Carter's success led to other pioneers arriving over the next few years including Nicholas Roanoke who founded Princess Anne County on March 16, 1773. At that time Front Royal consisted of just three or four houses scattered about an open field about one mile west of where it now stands. Today Front Royal remains a small town with only 2,000 residents spread out over five square miles located along I-264 between Petersburg and Fallston metropolitan areas
