The United States Army has been deploying Gift Certificates and other gift items to Front Royal, Virginia residents since the early 1800s. One of the most popular gifts given to military members is a soldier's Christmas present. Gifts have ranged from small tokens of appreciation such as a button or token, to more luxurious items like an expensive piece of jewelry or furniture. The history behind these gifts is reflective of the Soldiers and their families who Serve in our Armed Forces. The first soldiers deployed in America were fur traders who came overland from Siberia in 1775. In 1812, General James K. Polk sent US troops into Mexico to stop a rebellion led by Francisco Ixtlahuacan y Anaya. By 1814, Americans had established themselves in Florida and began recruiting Native Americans for service in the USArmy. The War with Mexico introduced new technologies such as artillery and rifles into American warfare which later proved important during World War II when ground forces were needed on both sides of the conflict. In 1861, after Confederate sympathizers burned down Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln put Union soldiers on standby across the southern states for possible deployment if there was another outbreak of civil war between the states under his jurisdiction. As events unfolded, Lincoln made it clear that he would not allow any more black people into America – this event became known as Emancipation Proclamation – so units dispatched to South Carolina were instead used to help arm Union men fighting in northern Virginia against Confederate compatriots under Robert E Lee’s command (1861-1865). In 1865, after Vicksburg was taken by Confederate forces and many Union soldiers died during its defense; Secretary of War Edwin Stanton directed that all remaining gift certificates be presented atEEF Headquarters located at Fourth Street & Market Place (now Freedom Plaza) on December 14th so that “the honored veterans may enjoy [Gift Certificates] free from charge until expended” (USArmy Gift Certificate History website). This event marked a turning point for Front Royal Residents as they became involved with their local military detachment through gifting activities at home and abroad (See also Veterans Day Parade article). From then until 1971 when gift certificates stopped being issued due to budgetary cuts within the Army Reserve program; Front Royal Residents donated approximately $10 million per year directly to Soldier's Families programs through army personnel stationed throughout Virginia including Hampton Roads area(See also "Soldiers' Families Programs" section below). In 1812, the United States Army was deployed to the Mexican-American War. The gift history of this army is as follows: 1812- American troops were deployed to the Mexican-American War in order to support Mexico's efforts against Spain. This gift history includes items such as clothing, munitions, and shoes. 1850- In 1850, the United States Army was again deployed to fight in the Mexican-American War. This time, they were supplemented by a small contingent of artillery units. Gifts from this period include artillery pieces, ammunition, and tents.
Front Royal was founded in 1749 by Captain John Smith and his men after they abandoned their Colony of Jamestown on the James River. The town, located near the confluence of the Potomac and Rappahannock Rivers, grew rapidly from its original residents who were drawn to its fertile soil, rich fishing grounds, and warm climate. In 1814 Front Royal was renamed for General Thomas J. "Trent" Lee, an aide-de-camp to Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The town continued to grow as a result of its location at the crossroads of two major wagon routes connecting Washington D.C. with Richmond and Petersburg. By 1830 Front Royal had a population of 5,500 people and it became an important center for trade and industry due to its strategic position within easy reach of both Richmond and Petersburg. On September 11th 1861 Confederate forces under General Robert Easley attacked Front Royal while Union forces were besieging Fort Sumter in Charleston County, South Carolina; the attack failed but resulted in over 60 casualties on both sides including 12 soldiers killed or mortally wounded by Confederate fire while only 2 Union Soldiers were killed or wounded in return. The town quickly rebuilt following the attack which helped contribute to its rapid growth during the early years of the Confederacy; however, because of this event FrontRoyal again slipped into obscurity until becoming an important community again when it regained its status as a post-secondary education center in 1978 when Virginia Tech moved into downtown Front Royal from nearby University Park
