Falls Church is a town in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. The population was 30,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Washington metropolitan area and is located on the Potomac River between Northern Virginia and Loudoun County to the north-east and Alexandria to the south-west. The name of Falls Church comes from Alliwood Creek which flows through it. The first European settlement in what is now Falls Church was made by Father John Smith in 1774. He founded an Anglican parish here and named it for his birthplace in Scotland, Alliwood House. In 1801, General John Walker's army invaded Virginia and encountered Native American resistance near Falling Rock Hill on November 12th of that year; this event is also mentioned in history as the Battle of Fallen Rock Hill. General Walker's force consisted of 1,200 men under Major Robert Ewell and 400 Native Americans led by Chief Powhatan who numbered 3,000 warriors including three chiefs: Algonquian (Hakim), Shawnee (Karen), and Kanien'kehaha (Powhatan). In 1802 Congress authorized Colonel Christopher Loyd to establish a post at Georgetown on Potomac River opposite Anacostia Creek with stores necessary for Indian traders engaged in businees with these tribesmen - this post became known as Loyd's Station after its founder. By 1814 there were only 50 residents living here; however many families came during war years when soldiers wereposted around this area for protection from Indians or bandits raiding farms or villages nearby but never settling permanently within these areas because they could not afford land or didn't want their horses stolen by Indians while deployed outside military camps etc.).
